1985 Audi Coupe GT 2.3 5 cylinder from Switzerland

Summary:

Reliable bargain with good sporting performance

Faults:

Never had any major faults.

Once an electric window and a mirror motor had to be replaced.

Once I had minor battery problems.

Currently, the car interior heats up a bit too much on long trips, and the engine consumes quite a lot of oil.

However, the car never let me down. It starts well even after I didn't use it for a long time. All the faults announced themselves in time so I had time to react. The car is very rust-resistant.

General Comments:

The car is very reliable and fun to ride. Contrarily to the USA, in Europe Audi is very frequent and parts are cheap and easily available. Audi dealers are rather expensive, but this old and relatively simple car can be fixed in any backyard garage for low cost.

Performance is quite good: contrarily to the previous post, I can go up to 50 km/h in the 1 st gear - and in the 5th gear, the car reaches 190 km/h at little more than 5'000 RPM. Moreover, acceleration from 0-100 km/h only takes about 8 seconds.

1985 Audi Coupe GT 2.2 from North America

Summary:

I will never let go of this car, it has become part of me

Faults:

Fuel pump went out at 150,000 miles.

Electric window motors have both gone out and been replaced.

General Comments:

This car is very fun to drive and handles well. I am six foot six and find the interior to be roomy and comfortable. This is probaly the most reliable car I have ever owned as it has never left me stranded and I generally get some warning before mechanical faults occur. About the only thing I do not like is the availability of replacement parts. The local dealer is fairly pricy and slow in obtaining the parts and local salvage yards seem to crush them rather than stock them.

You are so right. I have a 1985 Audi Coupe GT and I love it!

They rock, but are very rare. Heres a tip Don't SELL IT!

1985 Audi Coupe GT 2.2 from North America

Summary:

I love driving this car

Faults:

Distributor cap was replaced.

A constant velocity (cv) joint was replaced.

I replaced the alternator brushes about a year ago and things have been fine in that area ever since.

I did quite a bit of body work after buying it, due to the rust. But considering the age, it was in great shape.

Oil leaks from the engine block but, very minimal.

General Comments:

The body design still looks great after 16 years.

Plenty of driver and passenger room, even for tall drivers. The rear seating isn't bad either, but trunk space is lacking a bit.

Dashboard is still in great shape and looks line new after a good wipe. Overall interior is in great shape.

The performance is decent but not great. It's slow off the start because I have to change from first to second almost immediately. I don't know if this is a problem or the way it was designed. But after that the car picks up and wants to go. Top speed I have taken it to is about 140 Km/h, though the speedometer reads 220. Above that, it sounds like it needs a sixth gear.

Handling is great. Fuel consumption in the city is not so great. I can't be sure though since when filling up the gas tank I never get the same amount in and it's never full according to the gas gauge.

There have been no major problems with the car. It's only stranded me once and that was the alternator problem. The car has been very reliable and not too costly to maintain.

1985 Audi Coupe GT 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Quality car, a little pricey to run

Faults:

Brake discs warped, new discs and pads never cured problem, wheel vibration at speed, electric window cable snapped, steering wheel loose, intermittent light/electrical problems, wheel bearings. Head gasket has just blown - damn.

General Comments:

Nice to drive, especially with the 5 cylinder growl. Fit a Jetex exhaust; sounds superb and improves power. Handling nose heavy but improved with Sachs sports kit. Fuel consumption very good on long journeys - poor in town. Parts exorbitant unless you use specialists.

1985 Audi Coupe GT 2.2 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Every time above 3000RPM the oil light goes on. Bad start up, burning too much oil.

General Comments:

I don't want to give my GT up. It needs a little work from me this time.

I know this was written years ago, but this one sounds absolutely knackered. the audi 5 pot is very long lived usually and has to be seriously whupped for it to burn oil AND suffer from low oil pressure.
