1987 Audi Coupe from North America

Summary:

Find one, buy it, you will understand

Faults:

Left hand mirror motor not working.

General Comments:

This is my second Audi GT Coupe. I bought my first one in 1986 and sold it 3 years later, as the second baby came along.

I absolutely loved that car! My wife and I would occasionally see one on the road and wonder where ours was. Now in 2009, I just picked up a Red 1987 2.3L GT coupe with a digital dash 168,000 klicks.

I bought it from a wonderful individual who pampered it through the years, as he is the original owner.

The car is in immaculate condition and I am HAPPY once more!!!

This is truly the car that put Audi on the map, here in Canada at least.

I agree with all who say you don’t need a radio; the sound of this baby is the cure for that ails you.

1987 Audi Coupe GT 2.2 from North America

Summary:

Very dependable Audi, Think I'll keep her as an addition to my collection

Faults:

I purchased the car for $300.00.

Needed brake rotors, still needs window regulators. replaced ball joint. Plugs, wires cap rotor.

General Comments:

This is my fourth Audi GT coupe, I bought it for parts for my 85/87.5 kit Audi GT. It's an automatic :- (Good enough for her. not me! It has the 2.2 litre 110 hp engine. It has the digital dash which is cool. Runs really well considering it's an automatic. No major problems so far.

Looks good too.

1987 Audi Coupe GT 2.3 from North America

Summary:

5 cylinders Audis require no radio

Faults:

The things that have gone wrong with my coupe is clutch replacement, worn engine mounts, cv joints, basic stuff that breaks after 250,000 + miles. That's all.

General Comments:

I really like 85-87 coupe GTs. The sound of an Audi inline 5 cylinder engine is so good that you don't need a radio. The power is there with little modifications. This car rolls on the interstate at 80 mph. Not saying that I drive 80 mph or anything. Very stable at speed. It's a head turner. Fairly fuel friendly for a sports coupe. 25+ mpg Avg. I have driven many newer so called sports coupes and none have the combined balance that Audi Coupe GTs seem to have. The used price is usually very low so finding a pampered one can be a steal. Go for the 5 speed! Audi Coupes seem to have a soul. As the years pass the car seems to get better and better. I'm hooked.

As the owner of an '86 Coupe GT, I can corroborate your statement - five cylinder Audis don't need a radio at all! The mechanical music of the five cylinder is music the driver's ears! Coupe GTs are awesome!

I agree as well. I have an 86 and I put a custom exhaust on. WOW the sound is beautiful. I was given mine in exchange for room and board for a week. I love the way it handles. Could use about 20 to 30 more horsepower. Just all round great car.

I have a 1986 Audi Coupe GT, 2.0 5-cylinder auto. It's great! I've fitted a Q-Tech exhaust system which allows you to open and close it as you're going along - it's basically a Y-piece before the manifold where a motorized flap opens and closes. ;-) I've got a switch in the ash tray!

People always tell me that the autos are rubbish, it's personal opinion really, but it really annoys me when people try and tell me they don't like them if they haven't driven them. They're not slow either, even though people say they are.

Mine's done 143,000 miles now, I've done 34,000 in one year and there's been no problems at all - just general maintenance.

Haven't got a rear silencer on it either, apart from being able to open and close my exhaust. Got a few small things to do on it, but it's very, very good condition.
