2002 Audi TT Roadster, 2WD, 180HP 1.8T from North America

Summary:

A beatifully designed and capable roadster

Faults:

The side marker housing broke at 5K miles and left the side maker loose.

There was a recall on the ignition coils.

The covering of the interior storage lid in front of the gear shift has started to wear.

General Comments:

The 2002 model came in different varieties: front wheel drive or all wheel drive, 180HP or 220HP with the same basic 1.8 Turbo engine. Mine is the front wheel drive 180HP version. The performance is more "sporty" than "sports car".

Acceleration, breaking and cornering are good, but not outstanding.

The build quality is generally excellent and is holding up nicely.

The trunk size is remarkably big for its class, and good enough for weekend trips for two.

The seat positioning is pretty high, compared to some of its competitors.

The car has a power rear windshield, which is a great feature to increase comfort while driving top down at highway speeds.

The styling is a question of taste. I happen to like it, and it's not wearing off. But it's certainly a bit more radical than competitors.

The interior is a bit spartan, but very functional. Every bit is nicely designed to fit with the TT feel, with the exception of the standard VW/Audi light switch (my pet peeve).

2002 Audi TT Roadster 1.8L Twin-Intercooled turbo from North America

Faults:

None.

General Comments:

The Audi TT design in and out of the car is a "work-of-art". The quattro drive is seamless and smooth, just let the car do the work and hold on.

The 6-speed transmission is smooth and precise. Fit and finish is the best I have ever seen at ANY price range. The cockpit is gorgeous with leather and aluminum everywhere. All the controls and buttons have a solid feel.

At speeds over 130mph with the top down, the Roadster feels comfortable and at home.

2002 Audi TT Roadster from North America

Summary:

Audi TT - Stay Away

Faults:

Many things have gone wrong, windows don't work, or when they do, they work in their own way. This is a problem that the dealer has "fixed" 4 times now. They would have fixed it many more times, but I do not have the time to keep bringing it in for this problem so I wait for other things to build up. Like the dashboard electronics. The entire dash was replaced when the car had 10,000 miles. As a result, the stereo stopped working which took 2 months to get replaced. Ever since I've been plagued with other electronic problems, ESP warning light constantly on (after being fixed by the dealer 33 times). And a slew of other electrical related problems. There are no mechanical problems (unless the ESP Warning is mechanical related)

General Comments:

I bought this car because I liked the style, it is much different than anything out there. But after putting 23,000 miles on it there are many things I dislike. My right leg rests against a bar while driving that for the first few minutes is comfortable, but after a half hour, it starts to get annoying. The sun visor only covers the windshield and the seating position and large side windows make it horrible when the sun is beating in from the side. Granted I expect this with the top down, but in the winter, or on days that I don't put the top down, it really sucks to have the sun beating in on the side of your head with no visor to cover it up. I really do like the car, but due to the number of problems and design flaws, I am trading in for the porsche boxster. I should have bought the Porsche to begin with, but live and learn. I think Audi has a great concept of a car, they just need to revisit the electrical system and make some major changes.
