1989 BMW 3 Series 325ix 2.5 litre from North America

Summary:

A true all weather car

Faults:

The front tables wear out quickly and are expensive. Transfer case and front drive shaft must be well maintained ex:fluid change and proper lubrication.

General Comments:

The best all wheel drive car I've ever owned. Quick and very stable on ice covered roads. ABS stops on a dime. Good looking German sedan.

1989 BMW 3 Series 318i petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Incredible value and alround performance

Faults:

The car had not been looked after when I purchased it for my daughter. I spent around $1000 replacing noisy valve lifters, worn brakes and electric fan. The radiator was 70% full of sand (apparently from the cast engine block).

Some electric switches do not always work. The car is always left outside. I think it has not been garaged for many years by previous owners. Even so, the paint work is very good and there is no noticeable rust.

General Comments:

A little care has gone a long way with this car. The performance has increased since the valve lifters were replaced. It is great to drive around town and is solid as a brick. Driver vision is terrific and my daugther has gained her drivers license in it then gone on to become a confident driver.

The car can be driven in a nippy or sedate way in traffic. I generally drive it hard and it never complains.

Just another example of the fabulous BMW heritage.

1989 BMW 3 Series 325i touring 2.5 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good fun, but expensive to run

Faults:

Running problems caused by wiring loom fault.

Differential failed - expensive to replace.

Cylinder head problems recently.

General Comments:

Useful car, enough loading space.

The engine is great, but prone to head/head gasket problems.

The handling is great, but care is needed in the wet. The back of the car looses grip easily on slippery surfaces.

Comfortable to drive even over long distances with the sports seats.

Uses lots of fuel is driven hard. Otherwise is OK.

Uses a lot of fuel when driven hard?? What did you expect? It's a 2494cc straight 6 designed in the early 1980s and still holds its own with any comparable car today in terms of performance!!

The 325 is actually more economical than the much slower 320.

1989 BMW 3 Series 325i 325 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A fabulous sports saloon except when it rained

Faults:

ABS light frequently came on when pulling away form rest particularly when pulling away with the front wheels turned. Think it may have been the check circuit getting confused due to the different wheel speeds.

ABS light also came on when driving along. Cured this by cleaning the connectors under the back seat.

Rear exhaust brackets rusted through, but incredibly the exhaust never did - extremely well made exhaust.

General Comments:

The best engine I have ever sat behind very smooth and fast, although you needed to have 4000rpm + showing before it got serious.

Engine was too much for the chassis especially in the wet when it was lethal - I dreaded driving it in the wet. My later BMW's have much better wet weather manners.

Cockpit a bit cramped for my 6ft 2in frame.

Extremely well made with meticulous attention to detail.

1989 BMW 3 Series i from North America

Summary:

E30 might be better built then E36

Faults:

The hood shocks went twice, although I love that the way the hood opens.

The passenger side front fender tends to rust out on the bottom.

When at a stop and you accelerate there is at times a hesitation, before there is smooth acceleration.

Brake shudder from the front, I do not think it is the brakes.

General Comments:

This Bimmer likes the high test fuel.

The car is fun to drive and is just a little bit different then your neighbors Chevrolet.

Air Conditioning still blows cold.

Good seats and driver position, all instruments within easy access, solid feel overall.

1989 BMW 3 Series M-Tech 2.5 from Finland

Summary:

Real German quality car

Faults:

Well had a problem with the car alarm, but it was a afterward installed component so nothing to do with the car. Nothing has gone wrong with this car yet.. only thing that is done with the car is oil change and spark plugs.

General Comments:

This car was a rocket the first days I had it.. previous car I had was a Opel Manta Gsi and I thought that car was fast, well try out a 325 it's quite a shock.
