1991 BMW 3 Series 318iS 1.8L DOHC from North America
Summary:
Get a BMW. But not one like this!
Faults:
Timing case profile gasket.
Fan clutch.
Coolant hose.
Shocks.
Steering rack.
General Comments:
The car handles like it is on rails, and is usually fast enough to satisfy me. However it has been a bear to take care of, very expensive. I'll buy another BMW some day, but not one this cheesy.
Interior/exterior design is classic. Ride on the highway is horrible and loud. Steering wheel still vibrates even though I've invested $4000 fixing it.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

I have a 1990 BMW 318iS, and you are correct, they are hard to take care of and can get expensive. However, mine is by far the most comfortable ride that I have owned in my life. There is something to be said for the comfort of the "Recarro" style seating. Also, running on rails is an understatement.
