2000 Buick Century Custom 3.0 from North America

Summary:

Very comfortable, but too many things go wrong with it, and its very tight engine space to work on

Faults:

In the first month I had this car, the hard shifting occurred. Fortunately it was still under 30 day warranty. The GM dealer fixed it by replacing the control solenoid valve in the transmission. It would have cost me $270 to fix, but the warranty took care of it. I still have the info on the bill order... it says codes P1811, P1189. Part# 10478146 - Valve Sol 4.265. I called them again before trading this car in for a Nissan, they said it would cost around $350 to do this job today.

The tranny was good until last year. It started doing to hard shifting, high whining. Had to shut the car off and on again to fix the issue temporarily.

I changed the fluid and the reverse went out on the Buick, so I just got a new car to not mess with this one anymore. Spent way too much time on it.

Ever since I got this car, the radiator was always gunked up with I don't know what, but it was always nasty stuff. This caused an ongoing problem with the heater in the winter and overheating in the summer. Never fixed the darn problem.

Car also had the Throttle Position Sensor replaced due to high idle. That fixed that problem.

The gunk in your radiator was probably caused by GM's Dexcool coolant.

Sounds like the head gasket was gone! Good thing you got rid of it when you did, that is a pricey one! 3.1L engines in the Century are junk...

Summary:

It's OK

Faults:

After a BG transmission flush, the transmission after driving for a while would shift jerky in all gears. Had the dealer work on it for months off and on. Now they say a $1600.00 valve is the problem. I took it to a transmission repair shop. He changed a solenoid in the same valve for $400.00. Now it works great. I also have a slowing of speed now while going up a hill.

General Comments:

Car has been good for years, but I think GM should cover items like this, being most of them have the same problem.

Good-looking and good-handling car with relatively few problems

Faults:

Had the transmission replaced at 54000 miles, and still has same shifting problem.

Transmission replacement did not correct the problem.

General Comments:

The car handles and rides nicely.

It's a good looking car.

Headrests block vision when looking back.

This car rides quietly.

Summary:

Another GMC piece of crap

Faults:

Around 80000 miles the trans started to shift hard. Would have to pull off the road and shut off the car for a minute for the trans to reset. Had to have the solenoid changed twice, then had the trans rebuilt after putting on 10000 more miles. No more problems with the trans, we now have 130000 miles on car.

Other problems have sprang up, the engine lifters rattle at startup, and it quietens down after warming up.

The intake manifold is now leaking!

General Comments:

GM should have never let this car move off the assembly line with all the problems; as always with big corporations, it's better to hush the problem and let it be sold, and then try to fix it afterwards. Corporate greed is what this really is and they want the taxpayers to bail them out, B-LLS-it!!! You deserve to go out of business, no wonder the Japanese are kicking your butts.

If you plan on staying in business, you better get back to basics and stop ripping off the American public with high pricing and unreliable JUNK!!!
