1988 Chevrolet Astro CS 4.3 from North America

Summary:

Great so far in my 24 hours of ownership

Faults:

I just bought this van yesterday from the original owner. He bought it in 1988 and sold it to his Dad in 1989. His dad is now 79 and not driving anymore so his son (the original owner) got it back from him and has been driving it for the past 2 months. It only has 69K original miles!!! His father had the A/C changed from Freon (cost him over a grand) and had new tires put on 800 miles ago. He put a new alt. on in March. It did have the "peeling paint" from 1988. He used an automotive touch up spray paint (that didn't match that great). I bought the van for $1,200.00. Not a bad deal especially since it has all the paperwork since day one. The cruise control doesn't seem to work though. Not sure why.

General Comments:

This van has plenty of power and the seats are very comfortable. I might invest in a paint job in the next 6 months, but it really isn't that bad. I didn't buy the van for looks... it is a van! I have 2 other vehicles to use as my daily drivers, so I'm not worried about the van's look. Anyone have a clue about why the cruise control wouldn't be working at such low mileage?

Sweet deal. Hope you like it--these things can rumble on for a long time. We had an '89 for 12 years and 200k with hardly any trouble.

Not sure about the cruise. I'm surprised you even have it on the CS model. We had a CS, too, and it hardly had any options. Maybe is was retrofitted later on.

1988 Chevrolet Astro LT 4.3 V6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Formidable versatile family transport.

Faults:

What has gone wrong? nothing.

General Comments:

What a simply fantastic vehicle..

Its led an interesting life, first in the U.S. then as a taxi in the mediterranean island of Majorca, then driven over 1500 m iles back to the UK, I bought it a week later..

Handling is as you would expect, (like a truck) but ride comfort and interior noise is excellent. seats are fantastic (it has the double bench layout and seats 8) and every toy still works - the AC was recharged when I bought it and is ice cold at just 3.3 deg. centigrade!

Great workhorse / tow car / people mover in one package.. fantastic van, will only consider replacing it with another...

1988 Chevrolet Astro CS 4.3 V6 from North America

Summary:

Part of our family!

Faults:

Transmission gave out at 200,000 KM - replaced with a used one, which has performed flawlessly.

Engine gave up the ghost at 240,000 KM - replaced with a rebuilt short block, which has given no problem.

Idler arm replaced recently.

Recently replaced front rotors, bearings, calipers and pads, due to normal wear.

I've replaced the door handles on both the driver's front door and the passenger side front door twice, but they're reasonably easy to fix, and cheap.

Recently replaced the radiator... took just an hour of enjoyable wrenching, and it was done!

General Comments:

Wow, we could not be happier with this van!! We've put plenty of miles on it with our four kids, and it still looks and runs good! We bought it in B.C., in Canada, and live just south of the border, in Lynden, WA - hence the Kilometers on the odometer.

We think the previous owners were good at washing and vacuuming, but not so good at maintenance, as they most likely never changed the oil. Not long after buying it, we discovered it was burning through oil at a prodigious rate, but the trusty 4.3 kept chugging right along. When it got embarrassing to drive due to the smoke, we replaced the engine, which wasn't too expensive.

One item we've been surprised by is the durability of the interior. We've had four kids grow up in the van, with all their friends, and there are no rips yet. Even the carpet, which is burgundy in color, looks good.

When we get a new vehicle, I'll probably keep this thing myself for my own use. I'll lower it, put in a 350, and have a little fun with it!

I've come to know and love the simple, but reliable mechanicals of this vehicle... easy to work on, and obviously good in design!

I'm the original writer of the above review. The van now has 330,000 Km, and we're thinking about replacing it with another Astro Van. What a great van this has been. We will miss it when we sell it. Just last week, it started overheating, so I replaced the water pump, and the thermostat (a rebuilt water pump costs just $19.99... can you believe it?!) Just 2 hours and I was ready for a test drive... running like a champ. We've had the van for 10 years now, and it still looks good. We should still be able to get a few bucks out of it, and some other lucky family should be able to get a few years out of it yet. I highly recommend these vans... they are simply a great value for the money!
