2005 Chevrolet Aveo LS from North America

Summary:

Great car for the price!

Faults:

I had a dodge neon before that was totaled and did not want to spend much on a car so I bought a Chevy Aveo with no problems yet.

General Comments:

My 2005 Chevy Aveo currently has 90,000 miles on it and climbing fast. The only thing that I put money into was the front tires and I am still running the original back tires that have a way to go yet before they go bad.

I have no complaints about this car, I put $8,000 for it new and runs and starts just the same as when I bought the car new. I have a 5 speed and it consistently gets 38-42 MPG. I change the oil every 3,000 miles and use a standard grade oil. The only thing I need to do is change that timing belt which is recommended at 60,000 miles.

I plan on driving it to 200,000 miles which should not be a problem :)

2005 Chevrolet Aveo LS from North America

Summary:

Fun to drive, good gas mileage, dangerous to wreck

Faults:

Nothing before I wrecked it. Amazing amount of damage done for an accident that happened at a very low speed.

General Comments:

I bought this car from a rental car dealership, and absolutely fell in love. While it may not be the most attractive car to look at, it is fun to drive, and the appearance grows on you. For a 4-cylinder automatic, it had some great get-up-and-go. The inside of the car feels very roomy for it to be such a small vehicle, and the placement of everything is very convenient, with the exception of the cigarette lighter. You have to decide between using it or the passenger cup holder, but that's a common dilemma with small cars.

I only had my Aveo for 4 months, during which time I put about 15k miles on it. It handled this insane amount of driving perfectly.. absolutely no problems.

I would have to think seriously about purchasing another Aveo after being involved in an accident in mine, however. I rear-ended someone going about 25mph, and it completely obliterated the front of the car. Over 6000 dollars worth of damage from a low-speed car accident? I thank God I wasn't going any faster! The vehicle that I hit was a Hyundai Santa Fe, and it only had a small dent in the bumper.

Performance wise, this car was great in my experience.. just don't plan on having an accident in it.

The original reviewer's findings may be right - the Aveo, which is sold in Australia/New Zealand as the Holden Barina, scored the worst crash test scores amongst new cars for 2006.

Understand that the Euro NCAP test was none too hot too.

This is a cheap, tinny car that seduces with its looks and feature content, but seems to be lacking in the safety department.

I get the feeling from the title that you were expecting a Cadillac or something. This is an inexpensive economy car, of course it's made cheaply!

No, I expected a Cadillac - made cheaply.

I didn't expect a BMW, Lexus, or Mercedes, however.

I have been looking at the Aveos for about three months, but after reading some of the reviews I've decided to look at other makes and models. I think ill spend a little more and go for the Corolla or a Civic.

The Aveo is a great car if you get it for a very very cheap price new. But if you are looking at one for, say, $14K then I would definitely recommend you check out Toyota or Honda since they are much better built.

Have had a GREAT experience with the car. Bought it new in Feb 2005. It currently has 95,000+ miles and just now doing the first tune-up. Did have to replace wheels as they got bent about 18 months after we bought the car. Replaced them with custom rims and tires. Package deal purchased online for $500 mounted, delivered and ready to bolt on. Get an average of 32mpg at 75mph. This car is used for an 84 mile round trip daily commute. Has also been to Durango, Colorado twice and Dallas three times. If it wasn't for the growing family, would buy a second one with no hesitation.
