1998 Chevrolet K1500 Silverado 5.7 vortec V8 from North America

Faults:

My 1998 Chevy has a problem with missing when it is cold at an idle, and most of the time at slow acceleration. It will sometimes stop after 20 or 30 minutes of running. It hardly ever misses on heavy acceleration. It also smells like it's running rich.

General Comments:

Really good truck. The ride is not bad, and I like it.

1998 Chevrolet K1500 Z-71 5.7-(350) from North America

Faults:

I purchased this truck new.

It had to have the fuel pump replaced at 90,000.

The alternator went out at 130,000.

Otherwise the truck has been trouble free. It has had routine maintenance like the 100,000 mile tune up (which I only changed the plugs), and the front brakes have been replaced once.

1998 Chevrolet K1500 Silverado Z71 5.7L V8 350 from North America

Summary:

Best at EVERYTHING in its class!

Faults:

Had to replace the lower intake gasket at 197k.

Had to replace the water pump at 201k.

Replaced the alternator at 201k - didn't really need to though.

Replaced the radiator at 208k.

General Comments:

All in all, this has kept up REALLY well. I've had it for about one year, and for a ten year old truck, it is a beast! This is the most dependable vehicle that I have ever had.

It has the leather, blue two tone, tow package, Z71 all in this truck!

The gas mileage is decent for this truck; 16/20 city/hwy. I have researched and researched and researched trucks around the years of '97 and '98, and the K1500 has the best mpgs, best safety rating (look up '98 Ford F-150 for fun), the most power engine, fastest truck, and the most reliable (although a lot of that depends on how the owner keeps up with the vehicle).

I'm a college student and slight mechanic, so I like vehicles that are top notch for their class, and this truck fits the bill. Like I said, I've researched all of these trucks, and for '98 Chevy had the best bet. Don't believe me, do the research yourself. I'm not at all against Ford, but the safety rating pictures and video of that truck going at only 40mph really concerned me. 2003 was a good redesign for Ford, anyway here I am rambling on again about the research, but this is my experience with a '98 Z71.

1998 Chevrolet K1500 Cheyenne 4.3L V6 from North America

Summary:

Dependable, but underpowered

Faults:

Transmission went out at 120,000, cost $2,000 to replace.

Brakes and idler pulley went out at 130,000.

Big dent in the bed, but that's because I jackknifed my trailor into it.

General Comments:

The rig is dependable, albeit for the transmission going out.

But the 4.3 L V-6 is not powerful enough for this truck.

The interior is a very ugly burgundy color.

1998 Chevrolet K1500 Z71 5.7 Vortec V8 from North America

Summary:

Awesome!!

Faults:

When I first got this truck, it was for my 16th birthday and I had a few problems with it due to the previous owner not maintaining it. I got all the little kinks worked out, and I drive everyday to school and to work, all the problems at first were minor; costing $100 at the most.

General Comments:

I think in 1998 Chevrolet probably made the best truck ever!

I have a 1998 Z71, and I couldn't be happier; the 5.7 Vortec engine gives it a lot of power, and speed.

The extended cab version gives me extra space to put my football stuff in, or for my books after school. I have cloth seats, which have to be the most comfortable seats I have ever sat on in a car or truck.

I've gone mudding a few times, and have yet to find anywhere that has got me stuck before.

In 1998, Chevy definitely knew how to make the perfect truck.

I own a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado K1500 Z71. It's a beast on and off the road. It has a smooth ride and power under the hood. If you don't love this truck you're a Ford fan.
