1996 Chevrolet Lumina Standard from North America

Summary:

Great car

Faults:

We bought our 1996 Chevy Lumina after a good 56,000 miles had been put on it. The day we bought it, the battery shorted out on us 100 miles from home. We called the dealer, and they sent a tow truck to our Lumina and us up to get us home. They paid for the towing and they gave us a new battery free, even though it was not covered under warranty. After getting this problem fixed it ran with no problems for about six months.

The next thing to go was the alternator. By this time we had put about 18,000 or so miles on it. Needless to say we ran the car ragged. Again, we got the problem taken care of and the care ran fine for another few months. This is when the brakes went out.

The brakes wore out as they do with all cars. The hydraulic system in the rear was also leaking. We took it to the Chevy mechanics and again, problem fixed again.

The last thing we had fixed on our Lumina was the fan belt. After this last repair, we have went a good eight months with no troubles.

For as many miles as we put on this car, in such a short amount of time, it has ran beautifully. We love this car, and I recommend a used Lumina to anyone in the market for one. Just insure it was properly cared for, as with any used car.

The only problem I have had with this car is the seating. I am a rather short person, and getting the seat right to drive is difficult. However, after many tries I have managed to get a comfortable position for driving.

General Comments:

This car is a great car.

It can handle anything you do to it.

I highly recommend Luminas.

1996 Chevrolet Lumina Base 3.1L V6 from North America

Summary:

Sharp looking, and very reliable at a low cost

Faults:

The paint is awful. My car is white and the paint just won't stay on the car.

There is hardly any room to fit my legs. I'm 6'2", and I have a problem with where to put my legs in the car.

General Comments:

This is my first car that I have owned. It is very reliable and other than the paint falling off, I've had no problems.

When I bought the car at an auction, the only service the car needed were the fluids to be changed as well as the spark plugs and wires.

I'm a kid so, I have put on a Flowmaster exhaust. The original was fine. Tinted the windows pitch black, and have put in a stereo system using MB Quartz speakers, and JL subs.

For some reason though I have not figured out why my sub vibrates all of a sudden. The RCA's don't tough the power cable and it only happens when the car is running. Other than that no complaints.

1996 Chevrolet Lumina GS 2.0? from North America

Summary:

Reasonable transportation

Faults:

Alternator at 60,000 miles

Air conditioner compressor at 60,000 miles.

Water pump at 60,000 miles

Interior (seats, carpet) wore badly and prematurely.

Left rear window motor no longer works. Broke at about 60,000 miles.

General Comments:

I have mostly been happy with the car. There were several component failures at about 60,000 miles, leading me to wonder whether I was about to have problems, however after replacing the components listed I had no further issues.

Car handles well in the snow with snow tires, OK without. It handles well in rain and dry weather with regular tires.

The interior wore badly. The drivers seat stuffing and cloth were worn out by about 60,000 miles. The carpet at the drivers side developed a hole by about 50,000 miles. I was quoted $390 to replace the carpet and did not pursue the seat. The car had a 36K mile warranty.

I have had cars for far longer in which the interior looked almost new when I sold them (8-10 years old, 90-100K miles).

I'll be keeping this car for the foreseeable future.
