1999 Chevrolet Malibu 2.4 liter 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Almost an excellent buy

Faults:

Twice now, in a year's time, the front brake rotors have warped.

The power window buttons on the driver door failed. The whole component had to be replaced.

The antenna connection failed causing yet another visit to the shop.

General Comments:

This car, even though it has a 4 cylinder engine, is an excellent handling machine. I have had it on some very harsh roads and it sticks to them like super glue. It has great acceleration and passing ability.

An excellent family car if they could work all or most of the bugs out of it.

I have done some traveling with this car and it is great on the open road. It is comfortable and handles great with good milage too.

Correction...The Chevy Malibu 4 cylinder does NOT have "great acceleration and passing ability" This is totally a false statement. I own a V6 and can BARLEY pass 4 cylinder compact cars. I will never own a GM product in my life again.

I own the 99 2.4, and I love it. However the sway bar broke and it caused me to roll the car. I still love the car, and little damage was done.

1999 Chevrolet Malibu Base V6 from North America

Summary:

Don't buy unless they redesign the brakes

Faults:

Brakes were poorly designed and we were told there is not a fix for this problem. Every 4000 miles our brakes and rotors need to be changed. We have had 5 sets of pads and rotors done on this vehicle. Every oil change, we have brakes and rotors too.

General Comments:

We were very disappointed because we thought we would have the car for a long time, but we filed with the lemon law and Chevy is taking it back even before they are made to. We have been told the Malibus quite often have this problem. BE CAREFUL!!!

I bought a 1999 Malibu for my oldest Daughter 2 years ago and had very few problems. It had 34,000 miles on it and felt I did have the rotors turned and brakes replaced a little early, but that's been about it. She puts over 20,000 miles a year on it and she just loves it.

I have heard you can put a higher quality ceramic pad on it and that will help the early wear problem. The 3.1 liter V6 motor runs great, good mileage, and the car handles wonderfully. Very roomy for a mid-size car.
