1974 Chevrolet Nova Custom 2-Door 250 CID inline 6 cylinder from North America

Summary:

A very economical and dependable car, and ideal for a first car

Faults:

The battery tray had rusted and the battery fell into the radiator before I bought the car.

The starter failed two months after buying the car.

About 6 months after buying the car a valve spring broke.

The muffler rusted out and needed replaced.

The water pump started leaking after one year.

The heater core failed after replacing the water pump.

Except for the valve spring, most problems were related to the fact that the car sat for several years before I bought it.

I was able to repair everything myself. After the water pump nothing else went wrong with the car. The only money spent was for routine maintenance.

General Comments:

This was my first car. The bench seat was very comfortable except on hot summer days. It was vinyl, and the car had no air conditioning. An after-market seat cover helped a little. The car had a very good ride, much like a larger car. The 250 6 cylinder engine was smoother running than many new cars. It was very easy and economical to maintain. Fuel mileage was OK at 18 M.P.G.

I did wish, however, that the car was equipped with gauges instead of warning lights.

If I would have been able to afford two vehicles at the time I bought my truck, (in high school) I would have kept this car.

1974 Chevrolet Nova Base 250 - 6, 1BBL from North America

Summary:

An economy car, that could easily become a street machine

Faults:

A common problem that I had, which many other owners of Chevy L6 250 c.i. had, was that the intake manifolds bolts came loose, thus creating less vacuum so the engine would run poorly or not at all, also it leaked the critical atomized air/fuel mixture.

General Comments:

The bench seats are some of the most comfortable seats that I have ever sat in, if Chevy did one thing right on that car it was the interior.
