1999 Chevrolet Silverado from North America

Summary:

Recall!

Faults:

Let's get started.

I too own a 99 Chevy Silverado Z71 that has more problems than I'll probably be able to think of during this paragraph.

To start it off, I will be with the rear end. I have put three of them in it, and they keep going out. I have had one professionally rebuilt, and it didn't last no time, and this morning another one has failed me. They pop and everything when you turn, slowdown or stop. When I put it in reverse, the locker will stay engaged and not allow me to turn.

Next is the ABS light. Stays on along with the service engine light, and brakes go in and out. Replaced just about all rotors multiple times, and right front wheel has come completely off the truck, taking out everything but the arms. WITH A NEW SET OF BEARINGS AND AXLES.

O2 sensors are a huge problem along with the cats.

Next is the knock sensor, and the truck is very very hard to start and smells bad of gas when started finally.

Things in the truck just seem to be falling down or off all the time etc.

Recently blew a brake line, and now the ABS light is back AGAIN.

Always having to change bearings in this thing, and I don't ever drive it off road hardly. Just gravel driveway.

It is my daily driver that is about to have the plug pulled on it. I hate to hear that so many other people are having these same problems, but why doesn't GM do something about it? I'm to the point of buying a FORD or something else.

General Comments:

It drives good and everything, and looks good, but just keeps having the same ole problems, and I can't afford them any more.

1999 Chevrolet Silverado LS 5.3L from North America

Summary:

It's fast and tight, that's what I like

Faults:

I have had 2x 1999 Chevy Silverado 1500 LS. And both have had a problem with the ABS lights. I had to unplug the ABS brake mechanism to stop it from running all the time. Lights won't go off.

Fixed the first one; way too expensive!

Love the trucks. But recall this problem.

1999 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 LX 4.8L from North America

Summary:

Expected much more from GM

Faults:

Fuel sending unit replaced.

Front lower ball joints replaced.

Front torsion bars replaced.

Knock sensors replaced.

Drivers lower seat frame replaced.

Constantly bleeding the brakes.

Poor brakes, too poor to pull a trailer. Complete brake job and master cylinder replacement made no difference.

ABS comes on too easy, hitting a bump in the road while braking is enough to trigger it. While in ABS mode the truck barely slows.

ABS failure at 155K.

Window regulators replaced.

Dash lights randomly work.

Sticky throttle, lots of fun with a stick shift.

General Comments:

Very excellent off road performance in 4x4 mode. Gas mileage is OK. Hydraulic clutch inconsistent and problematic. However have 100k on the clutch. Constant poor brakes and ABS problems. Engine great other than knock sensors and after 150k miles need to add water about once a month. Front suspension doesn't hold up. Seat too weak and very uncomfortable on long trips.

1999 Chevrolet Silverado LS 4.8L from North America

Summary:

Good truck with pesty problems for the do-it-yourself-er

Faults:

The intermittent wiper motor module went out due to over heating and the solder melting on a resistor, which allowed it to drop out on one end. I bought a used one on eBay, then fixed the old one.

The fuel indicator module stopped indicating properly. Replaced it by dropping the fuel tank with a new one off eBay.

The accelerator sticks when first pushed, making the truck surge forward. Haven't fixed that yet.

Rear sliding window plastic frame cracked, leading to leaks into the cab. Quoted $250 to replace at non-dealer shop.

CD player in radio read error constantly when trying to play CDs. Replaced with used OEM radio/CD player from eBay.

Occasionally when accelerating uphill, the engine will knock. Dealer says that's normal? Could be crappy fuel or auto adjusting timing? Not sure.

General Comments:

Great truck, other than the pesty issues.

I get almost 18mpg. Not a daily driver anymore due to fuel cost.

Such a good truck that I can't replace it for general hauling. I bought a VW Jetta TDI for my commute.
