2003 Chevrolet Silverado 5.3 Vortec from North America

Summary:

Dependable

Faults:

My brake lights went out. One went out, then a week later the other one went out. But the brake light on the cab of my truck still works. I checked the fuses and changed the bulbs, I also checked the voltage out put on the fuse plugs. I still don't know what's wrong. Any tips?

General Comments:

I've never had any problems with my truck. I use it for driving around every day, and sometimes going on trips home, but it has never given me a problem until now. Yes it's something small, but I like keeping everything in good shape on it.

2003 Chevrolet Silverado SL 6.6L Duramax diesel from North America

Summary:

It's a great truck!

Faults:

Injector #3 failure, probably needs all 8 new injectors. This occurred somewhere around 140,000 miles.

Left front wheel bearing hub replacement at 125,000 miles.

Left rear wheel bearing hub and axle seal at 145,000 miles.

New brake rotors, tires at 145,000 miles.

General Comments:

Truck is great, I love it, but the cost of injector replacement is incredibly high at $5100 all-in for parts and labour. It takes 6-7 hrs to do ONE injector or one bank of 4. With this being a common issue, buyer beware unless you're the strong mechanic type.

Transmission is great, but also expensive to fix. So far so good for me though.

The truck is very reliable, and I've had almost no issues with it aside from the injectors and fuel problems.

2003 Chevrolet Silverado LT Z71 5.3 from North America

Summary:

A 10 being tops, it's a 5

Faults:

When right rear tire is off pavement and spins, then turning left there's a grinding and crunching sound; left tire is trying to lock up. Dealer did nothing two times while under warranty.

Wipers won't turn off. Have to remove a fuse. Started two years ago acting up once in awhile, now they work overtime.

When eighty degrees and higher outside, it's down on power while driving in traffic. Have to put the pedal to the floor to hit a passing gear. OK at cruising speed.

Steering shaft rattles at the slip joint under the hood.

General Comments:

Truck tows good, struggles when it's hot outside.

Runs flawless when cooler weather is here.

Plenty of room for a regular cab.

Electronic brake controls for trailer are an easy connect.

Don't like being stuck with GM's design flaws.

2003 Chevrolet Silverado LS 5.3 from North America

Summary:

Excellent truck, I would definitely buy a third one

Faults:

This has been a great truck for me. I've only had service maintenance done to it, and have never had a problem.

General Comments:

I bought this truck off the lot, and have driven it ever since without missing a beat.

The horsepower to weight ratio is excellent (not a race truck, but can put up a good run when call on).

Mileage is about 16/21 City/Hwy, not exactly a Mini Cooper rating but it's a truck not a Mini Cooper. Although, with gas prices going up to near $4 a gallon, I may have to consider getting a hoopty to commute to my day job, and drive the truck for my business, and just for fun.

2003 Chevrolet Silverado Z-71 Extended Cab 4.8 gasoline from North America

Summary:

Looks great, but is the most unreliable vehicle I've ever owned

Faults:

At 30,000 miles I had to have the battery, alternator, A/C compressor and condenser, power steering pump, water pump, and belt replaced and thank goodness it was under warranty. No one seems to know why all that went out at once.

At around 50,000 miles I had to put another alternator in my truck.

And you guessed it at 80,000 miles I had to replace the battery and alternator again and replace the passenger side power window motor.

Oh yeah, and just this past week at about 90,000 it got another alternator and the dealership still doesn't know what is wrong with my truck and states that it "must be a faulty alternator." I beg to differ. My luck isn't so bad that I got 4 bad alternators in a row.

General Comments:

Love the look of the truck.

Performance, when it's working, is great but it's not very reliable due to electrical problems that the great GM service techs can't seem to fix with their great training and experience.
