1998 Chrysler Cirrus from North America

Faults:

I have this problem now where the engine will spit when I accelerate slowly once I hit above 50 mph. It will also backfire occasionally too. If anybody knows what this is, please tell me.

Thank you very much.

Cannot say for sure, but I would check the timing belt. It sounds like your valve timing could be out of whack (from a loose belt), which could be causing your backfiring. If it is backfiring through the throttle body, it could also be a fire hazard. I do not wish to make you nervous, but am giving you my honest opinion. As you may know too, if the timing belt goes, it could destroy the engine. Again, I cannot say for sure without looking at the car, but the timing belt would be where I would at least start looking if it were my car. At the very least, if the timing belt has not been changed yet, it is definitely due, if not overdue. Good luck.

1998 Chrysler Cirrus LXI V6 from North America

Summary:

Not worth the money!

Faults:

Seats have worn badly.

I have put 3 transmissions into this vehicle.

The engine is going; the car stalls, doesn't want to start and overall runs very poorly.

General Comments:

The interior of this vehicle is very plush and luxurious, and the exterior is very sporty. Unfortunately, I would never buy another Chrysler after my experience with this car. I have had trouble since the day I bought this vehicle.

1998 Chrysler Cirrus LXI from North America

Summary:

This car was great up until a few months ago

Faults:

Our 1998 Cirrus has been very dependable up until several months ago.

First it started jumping like it was very briefly stalling, then the engine started stopping even when we were on the Interstate going 70 mph which is very dangerous. Then it proceeded not to start after it stalled. We have had a new fuel pump, fuel filter and a Pg valve installed and it is still doing the same thing. Has anyone else had this problem with their Cirrus? The engine light does not come on.

General Comments:

We love the car, especially on trips.

This thing with the engine stalling is driving us crazy!

I have a Chrysler '99 Cirrus Lxi V6 with 85K miles and am experiencing similar problems. Within the last 6 months the car engine will just shut off. All gauges on the dash appear normal and the check engine light does not appear. The electrical system seems fine, radio, lights, etc. continue to work, but the engine just dies. Usually within 10 seconds or so you can restart the car, but I have had it dead for about 5 minutes before. Completely bizarre, you can be sitting at a light and all of a sudden, it dies, or like this past weekend, (returning from the mechanic ironically -- having replaced the EVG valve), I'm going 60 down the road and it dies so as I begin to pull over to the side of the road coasting, all of a sudden the engine just decides to start up again. My mechanic is perplexed and has hooked it up to the car's computer to see what the problem is and detects nothing wrong. He's been driving it around 5 miles here and there and cannot duplicate the problem. We've gone weeks with no problems and then there's time like this weekend where it happened 3 times to me. I'm beginning to think that the car's computer has something going wrong. Any additional ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

1998 Chrysler Cirrus LXI 2.5L from North America

Summary:

Great car, nice ride, depreciated too quickly for a new car

Faults:

The first thing that went wrong with the Cirrus was the electrical fan, it started making noise at about 70k miles, but the dealer fixed it. I had bought an extended warranty so the fan was covered.Next there was a small leak coming from my transmission. It started around 85k miles. I had it fixed, but it came back about 25k miles later. The next thing that went wrong was at 116k miles: the throttle positioning sensor. I only knew this because the check engine light came on, I bought the part and put it in my self. Well 24hrs later the engine light came on again and when I took it to the dealer to have it done right they told me it was the same sensor. I told them to fix it and they did. Well 24hrs later the engine light came on again and that was it for me, I had it fixed again and traded it in the next day. Also the leather seats started to fade and crack at around 65k, I don't feel the leather they use on the Cirrus is of the same quality as the Jeep Cherokee or the Sebring.

General Comments:

Over all I was very happy with my car it lasted me 7 years and was only in the shop over night twice for repair and even then it was minor. For the money I spent on the car and the price I got at the trade I wouldn't buy this car again it just depreciated too much.

1998 Chrysler Cirrus LXI 2.5 Litres from North America

Summary:

A very performing and economical car for a first time buyer

Faults:

I have only minor problems with the car so far, changed rotors, brake pads and have been having issues with the wiring of the headlights and fog lights. For some reason the light bulbs are OK, but the lights won't come on, one day 1 headlight might be off and same for a fog light and the next day might be the opposite lights doing it. It looks like I have been able to fix the issue, but I'll have to wait to see if it will reoccur again. Overall this car has been great, since I went from a toyota Tercel to a much bigger car that I was not to crazy about at first (since I'm still a young fellow) but has been great. it is a very smooth ride although I find when it is cold out, it sometimes hit pretty hard in the front end of the car. (loud bang)

General Comments:

Overall I think Chrysler have outdone themselves with the Cirrus LXI and newer models that replaced it, the Se bring.

Very fast car and handles very good.

Do love the arm rest that they have put in that some older models don't have.

I would definitely by another car from these guy's.
