1992 Citroen BX TZD 1.7 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A high spec workhorse

Faults:

Hydraulic pipes needed flushing.

Radius arms needed replacing (expensive!!!)

Rubber diesel and hydro return pipes started splitting loosing hydro fluid.

Intermittent starter jam.

Intermittent dash light problem.

Intermittent ABS failure when the engine is cold.

Jobs to do:-

Front suspension legs need overhauling and the spheres need changing.

General Comments:

Probably the last car I would have considered until I drove one.

The most comfortable car I have driven. Feels secure and very roomy.

Although there have been a few problems the car has never failed to deliver me to my destination or door step.

The hydro suspension is a god send for us country folk as these cars don't mind a bit of off roading.

Cheap to buy, impressive performance but needs a service history if you buy one.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

1992 Citroen BX 16 TGI Top 1.6 from Germany

Summary:

Nothing special, but a good friend for every day and an always underestimated car

Faults:

Refering to the low distance travelled with this car, only the four suspension spheres had to be renewed.

General Comments:

These cars have lots of advantages, but the owner has to live with some "extraordinaries". This one is my second BX and my fourth Citroen overall. It has clearly the best quality of the four cars, it's not really fast, but is always quick enough.

However, it's a very comfortble car and, because of the special model "Top" (in other countries: "Millésime"), it's very well equipped. I've just been in Spain for a holiday with the BX Top, which means 1.500 km in one day... no problem.

When this car will be worn out in a few years, I guess it won't be possible to find another one again. Up to now, I have no idea what to buy then in exchange for the BX.

1992 Citroen BX 19 GTi 8v Auto 1.9 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

After driving 20K miles in 6 months:

New exhaust back box.

New alternator.

2 tyres.

Plenty of oil.

Erratic speedo.

Knackered boot catch bolts.

...er...that's it.

General Comments:

This is my 2nd BX (the other's still going very well after 135K miles).

It's quick, even in automatic guise, and has a real luxury car feel. As expected, ride quality is fantastic (but it makes my friend feel nauseous, so if you're looking at one, take the whole family for a test drive..) Add to this great seats, nicely weighted power steering, good driving position, and electric goodies, and it adds up to a superb distance tourer with a bit of extra grunt when required.

On the minus side, it goes through a litre of oil in about 2 weeks. The famous Citroen brakes are better on this car if you disable the ABS.

If you can find a decent Citroen mechanic (dealers are hopeless), then for the money you are laughing.

I agree the BX is a sound car. I had a BX GTI from new in the early 90s. Included ABS as standard. Can't see how disconnecting ABS has any benefits. If you are lucky, ABS never operates. How does disconnecting it improve brakes?
