1994 Citroen Xantia LX 1.9 Turbodiesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The best car I have ever owned and certainly the most dependable.

Faults:

Nothing at all for 3 years and then at just over 70000 miles the suspension failed. This happened the week that I put it on sale; soon after my mechanic advised me to replace it for something newer as Xantias start giving problems after 70-80000miles;

Cost of repair £200.

Drivers door motor failed after 67000 miles.

General Comments:

Excellent looks; restrained and elegant still looks better than its replacement.

The interior is rather dull in comparison to the outside.

Amazing economy from the Turbo diesel engine.

Loads of room.

Sounds like a tractor on start up, but smooth, quiet and pulls like a train on the open road.

Could be more comfortable.

Ride quality deteriorated over time.

Depreciation wiped out any economic advantages that the diesel had.

1994 Citroen Xantia SX 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A smooth quiet ride. but a bit too unreliable

Faults:

The handbrake cable broke on 1st mot when I bought the car.

New front disks at 86000.

New hydraulic pump fitted at 86000.

Steering rack gaiter replaced 87000.

Rear washer has never worked since I have had the car.

Front washer does not always work.

Central locking unlocks when it wants to.

Key fob/alarm sensor has never worked since I have had the car.

Heater display back light had new bulbs fitted at 89000.

Dash lights do not always work properly.

Rear suspension bush replaced at 95000.

Rear suspension spheres replaced at 100000.

Heater matrix replaced at 103000.

Radiator replaced at 104000.

Head gasket blown at 104000.

General Comments:

This car is fairly comfortable, but I tend to get lower backache on long journeys, (I have never had backache before).

The ride cannot be faulted when it is working correctly. This is most of the time. (It is no less reliable than normal shock absorbers, and certainly smoother.)

I have a fair amount of trouble with this car, it might be bad luck, and it might be a poor car in general.

This car is difficult to work on, so not recommended for the home mechanic.

The suspension is in fact easier to work on than conventional shock absorbers.

I will not buy another Citroen as I have had three now and feel like a change.

I'm only 20 and drive the same car, I would have to disagree with relation that it's a difficult car to work on at home.

Have never sent my car to a dealer to be fixed, merely learned myself, its actually quite an easy car to work on.

1994 Citroen Xantia Dimension 1.9 TD from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Comfortable and smooth, but a little too slow

Faults:

Front Brake Disks went after I owned the car for a week.

Replaced front brake calipers and handbrake cable.

Remote Central Locking has never worked meaning alarm never comes on.

General Comments:

Excellent interior with velour seats, extremely comfortable on long journeys.

Suspension gives a smooth ride, but can make the car feel like a boat on corners.

The car is not as responsive as other TD's, and has a poor 30-35mpg economy rating.

Brakes are responsive and feel secure even without ABS.

1994 Citroen Xantia SX 2.0i 8v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Slightly underwhelming

Faults:

Small coolant leak around thermostat housing which needed new gasket.

Rear suspension spheres had to be re-gassed.

Front suspension drop link failed, making a loud clonking noise.

General Comments:

Coming after several years driving a CX, the Xantia was basically a good car, but not a special one. The 2 litre 8 valve engine was low geared, noisy and not very quick, spoiling cruising refinement. Fuel economy OK.

The driving position was not totally comfortable - the seat felt at a strange angle all the time.

Ride very good and handling OK for a family car. Lots of room in the back.

Can't fault it too much for reliability.

Would only consider another Xantia if it was a 16 valve petrol or a diesel.

1994 Citroen Xantia LX 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A pleasure to drive and economical

Faults:

Nothing Yet :-)

General Comments:

A comfortable car, suspension is a dream, floats down the motorway at 80MPH.

Lots of room inside. All electrics and space make it a home from home.

I get about 600 miles out of a full tank of petrol.

The only bad points are the rear view mirror takes up too much of the windscreen view and the tailgate has lost its colour due to the fibreglass material it is made of.
