1998 Citroen Xantia Exclusive 2.1 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

One is good, two would be great

Faults:

I had the car 3 days and the battery failed, this was soon put right.

At New Year the heater fan failed. This meant it failed on full speed, the noise was annoying. It was fixed for £170.00.

General Comments:

This I have to say, is without a doubt the best car that I have had. It is so economical you wouldn't believe.

I can get 60 miles per gallon solo, and 40 towing my 1370 kilo caravan. Quite simply it does what it says on the packet.

The seats are really comfy, the leather is wearing well.

I would buy another Citroen any day. I can't speak too highly of these wonderful cars.

Don't use bio diesel in these cars, the fuel pump (extremely expensive) will be irreparably damaged.

I reckon these 2.1 engined cars are slightly quicker than the HDi models.

Be prepared for tears if the clutch pedal mechanism fails.

1998 Citroen Xantia LX 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

One word says it - OUTSTANDING

Faults:

The plastic clip that connects the clutch cable to the pedal broke, 140k.

The clutch failed (usual sequence when the clip fails, it's usual that the clutch is badly worn and ready for replacement, my wife's Xantia did the same at 120k)

Heated/air con blower fan failed at 150k £25 from a breakers yard, 5 screws I plug under glove box, job done.

General Comments:

All things considered, and for what I paid for the car, fantastic.

The car finish still looks great with no corrosion. I have traveled over 75000 miles in this car (in extreme comfort) over 4 years, it has never failed an MOT test (while I have had it), and apart from the above, it's had a couple of bulbs, a track rod end, and a new timing belt as recommended, regular oil and filter changes, and the amount of tyres you would expect to use with the mileage I have done.

I paid £400 for the car as a stopgap 3 years ago when my equally as reliable Citroen BX was written off by a white van man, and loved it.

1998 Citroen Xantia 1.8i 16v from Serbia

Summary:

A car built for cruising, enjoying the ride..

Faults:

When I bough the car, the previous owner said that he has replaced few things regarding transmission and steering.

In my hands, she had a problem with air condition fan brushes, and I had to replace one front sphere.

Sometimes (especially cold weather) the steering wheel is rock hard when the car is first started-and it is so for 5 minutes.

General Comments:

The softest car I have driven and the roomiest cabin.

The feeling when seated in the rear is presidential:-)

Great road holding despite it's 'soft look.

It only needs a bit of German precision in the engine and the transmission.

In the future I`ll be looking this type of suspension again-it is very comfortable and reliable-no matter what happens to it.

We have lousy roads here in Serbia, but this car literally "irons" the bumps.

And yes, it is very cheap in Serbia (for the money I can buy a crappy golf 3 `94 here) so I can afford to buy it anytime-cheap parts also.

1998 Citroen Xantia SX 2.1TD from UK and Ireland

Summary:

I love the suspension

Faults:

Radiator failed in middle of Scotland on a Bank Holiday weekend. 83000 miles.

ECU failed not long after, costing £1200, took dealer 4 days to find fault and 3 weeks to find a replacement. 87000miles.

Cooling fans failed summer 2005. 97000 miles.

Injectors had to be replaced 05/2006, cost £400 @ 108000 miles.

The suede effect seat edges are starting to wear through on the sides. soon to be replaced with full leather.

General Comments:

Although all these faults have cost a lot of money, I am still happy with the way the car handles.

The suspension is superb and reliable.

I found the Citroen BX to be a lot more reliable than the xantia.

I wouldn't buy another 2.1TD, stick to the 1.9TD.
