1990 Citroen XM from Belgium

Faults:

Normal wearing problems in systems as alarm.

Hand adjusted mirrors

Electric door opener.

Two different external gearbox rods welded.

Three times, nasty gas cable broken.

Clutch and cable replaced.

One driving axle.

Brake discs.

Hydraulic main valve.

New injection pump after 2 months.

2 suspension spheres.

4 new glow plugs.

Small leak in plug of the hydraulic junction valve (O-ring repaired with thin nylon wire at highway).

General Comments:

Even with a 1300kg caravan, at least 65000 km, no complaints.

It's like a sexy charming lady.

You realise her faults, but forgive her every time for the delicious ride she gives you. It's a hate-love relation.

Take care in time for:

All filters, also hydraulic-and oil.

Spheres check on pressure.

1990 Citroen XM from Lithuania

Summary:

A good car, but very difficult to repair

Faults:

Speedometer was not working.

The stop lights combination was broken.

General Comments:

Car handles very well, the steering wheel is very comfortabile.

I don't like the panel, but interior is good.

Citroen's is most of one of the cars, which is very difficult to steal. The main wires is very difficult to reach. But also difficult to repair it, if broken.

1990 Citroen XM SED 2.1 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A brilliant car

Faults:

Apart from normal consumable items, this car has not had any expensive repairs.

General Comments:

This car is perfect I do a 150 mile daily commute, and my car has never let me down. It is cosseted somewhat with oil/filter change every 2 months. Garaged over night, and with heater for company in the winter months.

The XM is a fantastic mile muncher, and I will be holding on to this car for a few years yet. This car is coming up to 13 years old and starts first time.

XM has covered a further 15000 miles since last entry, rear exhaust box has been replaced, new front disc's. Air con is now working a bit of expensive luxury to repair (It never worked from the day the I bought the car).

After completing over 320000 miles my XM has finally expired, not due to the car giving up the ghost, but due to some idiot crashing into my rear.

1990 Citroen XM Ambiance 2.0 from Netherlands

Summary:

A very nice, but underestimated car which doesn't deserve its bad reputation

Faults:

Nothing went wrong since I owned it.

When I bought it:

ABS was not working.

The airco is disabled (needs a refill probably)

The suspension computer was disconnected (sticks in "sport" mode all the time)

General Comments:

I really like this car a lot. Old XMs can be bought for a small amount of money, and they have a reputation to be very unreliable (especially the earlier models like mine) but I never had any problems with it so far.

The 2.0 motor from the Ambiance model has a little more power than the standard 2.0. I'd say that this one is not very fast, but strong enough for the car because it's not a car for racing around anyway. It's made for very relaxed driving (the automatic transmission suits this car well).

The luxury level of the Ambiance is very nice: many unnecessary, but nice-to-have accesoiries (like electrically adjustable seats and the 13th window) The only thing that would add something for me is cruise control.

I like the design, I like to drive it and overall, the cost (maintainance and fuel) is not as high as I expected it to be.

I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a luxury car with the most comfortable drive, but can live with some small issues and can do some of the small repairs (minor electrical faults) him/herself.

1990 Citroen XM Sei 2.0i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Amazing handling, space, performance and individual as well

Faults:

Rear passenger electric window was not working when I got the car- £60 from a breaker got me a 2nd hand unit.

Most of the major money has been spent already - the first two owners were scrupulous. The car has had new suspension spheres, clutch, master cylinder, discs, pads, alternator, and a full Citroen service history.

The car is in excellent condition, with only minor wear visible on some of the chrome exterior trim.

The fault indicator computer lies frequently, a known XM fault.

General Comments:

Late 1980's spaceship for comfort conscious style outlaws with no time for boring cars. It's pretty gutsy for a 2.0i in such a big car, although the urban mpg is not as good as some, the sheer effortlessness with which this car cruises at high speed is a revelation. The ride is magic carpet, and for such a big boat the way it turns into a corner and resists roll is amazing.

I really wanted an XM and it was such a bargain at £900. Sei trim gets all the goodies such as electric everything, leather and air con. Choose carefully as there are a lot of ropey sheds for what seem like bargain money, and avoid the low specced ones. Why on earth would you buy some iffy old Granada??
