1997 Citroen Xsara Exclusive 1.8 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A very reliable and comfortable car to drive

Faults:

Catalytic converter rusted through at 85,000 miles.

Rest of exhaust replaced at 89,000 miles.

Stuffing coming out of drivers seat.

Tailgate lock linkage had come loose when purchased but was easily put back on and been fine since.

Now starting to knock on front suspension, probably worn lower wishbone pivot bushes.

General Comments:

Has been a very reliable car and only suffered wear and tear replacements.

Passed every MOT with nothing more than headlight alignment and bulbs. 2007 MOT was a clear pass.

Very sporty motor with excellent road holding, although is prone to some wheel spin if you lay on too much power from a standing start. Having said that it is very controllable under those conditions.

Level of equipment is high with a CD multichanger.

This is my 5th Citroen and I would happily buy another.

1997 Citroen Xsara LX 1.4i petrol from Malta

Summary:

Great car extremly Reliable, and great road handling

Faults:

Petrol pump.

One rear shock absorber because of the poor roads.

General Comments:

Great looks, great car.

The suspension's hard and not soft as many say.

Body roll is very limited.

But potholes and poor roads felt harsh into the cabin because the suspension is stiff, but the pay off is great handling.

The ride is impecably stable and the handling is superb. The power assisted steering has plenty of feel and is much better than a new: Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Renault Megane, Citroen C4, or Peugeot 307.

The handling is superb; this is my father's car, I have the new Renault Megane; while the ride is more smooth than the Xsara, the handling is no match. It's not about grip, it's about the steering, where the Xsara is still one of the best in terms of road holding because there is no electric power steering that dulls the drive.

Great reliability, no problems in 9 years, just only wear and tear.

Build quality is avarage in some areas and better in other areas. So after 9 years, there are some rattles in the cabin, but soon they will be solved.

There is plenty of space front and rear, and the head room is good in both.

Seats are soft and could be better, but they're comfortable.

Dashbord is stylish and rattle free, and the radio cassette is superb and reliable. No faults.

1997 Citroen Xsara SX 1.8 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Very underrated

Faults:

Virtually fault free, Air Conditioning needed to be 're-gassed' in 2002.

General Comments:

This was one of the first batch of right hand drive vehicles, and was the subject of two safety recalls, but both were handled quickly and efficiently by the dealer.

Tyre and brake wear were both quite high... (probably as a result of my driving!)

Soft suspension gives a nice smooth ride while handling remains respectable.

Road, wind and engine noise are all well controlled, making motorway and 'A' road cruising a comfortable and stress free experience.

Fuel economy is not the best in class, but is reasonable.
