1993 Citroen ZX avantage 1.9D from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Very reliable, a relaxing driving experience

Faults:

New cam belt fitted (to be on the safe side)

Sticking off-side caliper replaced

Drive-shaft gaiters replaced

Tachometer reconnected.

General Comments:

This car has a very positive engine that seems like it will never wear out. It isn't particularly fast, but this has never caused me any problems, and I have been able to have some fun driving it.

Long motorway journeys are spent in total comfort and the cabin is relatively quiet at 70-80mph with astonishingly few rattles for a car of this age and mileage. Over 55mpg has been achieved before now out on the open road.

The car grips well and doesn't roll too badly considering the plushness of the shocks.

Overall I'd say that for £1500 this car was a good buy and I think I'll be keeping mine for a couple more years at least.

1993 Citroen ZX Volcane 2.0i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A Friday Afternoon (as in 'built on a..') Lemon

Faults:

Electric motor in Sunroof seized.

Panel lights on heater console only started working after owning the car for 2years.

ABS became intermittent. Finally stopped working due to faulty sensor on one of front wheels.

Mysterious engine surging and idle cut-out. Originally put down to faulty MAP sensor by dealer and replaced (twice). Now it is believed to be a faulty ACC valve (more likely).

Engine management warning light on dashboard permanently alight. This could be due to the ACC valve problem - however, the dealers were unsure if this was indeed causing the warning signal.

Faulty lambda sensor caused engine to run extremely rich - eventually replaced.

Mysterious central locking fault causes car to rapidly (and repeatedly) lock and unlock for no apparent reason - whether it be just sitting unattended or in the middle of driving down the road.

Rear passenger door lock failed. Child lock permanently engaged and 'lockability' of door seems to have random success. Must lock manually as central locking on that door doesn't always work.

Cable for rear passenger side window winder snapped. Unable to operate (window now slides down on its own), considering sealing shut.

All four door stays (things that keep doors open), have failed. Doors can't be left open as they always swing shut.

Drivers sun visor 'lock' broken. Now permanently hanging down.

One bar of rear window de-mister has stopped working.

General Comments:

For the first two years owing the car has been a pleasure. It has been a good handler with sufficient enough 'poke' to keep a driver interested. The interior is comfortable and has stood up to wear and tear reasonably well.

However, after a period of time the reliabilty has degraded appallingly. Strange faults and parts breakages have become a frequent and irritating regularity. I have now spent more in keeping the car on the road than I did in the initial purchase. In it's current state it is probably worth very little, so it is no good as a trade in for another car. I am stuck between spending more money to keep it on the roads or to cut my losses and somehow find the money to buy something better AND dispose of my Citroen.

1993 Citroen ZX volcane 1.9i from Chile

Summary:

A real sport car

Faults:

The electrical system. I had spend much money to recovery it.

Not much autonomy with fuel.

Windows switches works badly.

Front lights supports broken.

General Comments:

This car is very nice to drive. First gear so powerful and it can take the car so fast.

Can turn in corners so fast even in third gear.

Powerful fifth gear.

Good Michelin tires. 185/65-14.

Smooth engine after 9 years since built.

Seats very comfortable, even back seats.

Very resistant to crash in backside. I had been crush by a Mercedes E300 Elegance, this car crush me on 100 kph.

The Mercedes results more complicated than mine.
