1994 Dodge Caravan SE from North America

Summary:

Bad Transmission

Faults:

Automatic locks broke. The electrical system would go off and on by itself making the locks go up and down when no one was pushing the buttons.

The original tires did not last long and had to be replaced.

I had other engine problems that I can't remember at this time, but luckily, I had a friend who worked on the constant problems I had.

I had a terrible time with the transmission. It was bad. No one from the company or dealer would help. They did not want to admit that there was a problem with the transmissions although I had found others who had the same problem. I had to replace it, and it was very costly.

Most of the plastic interior started to crack and break as the car got older. The interior started falling apart a piece at a time.

General Comments:

I purchased two Chrysler/Dodge vehicles in my life because a relative worked for them. I had terrible problems with both vehicles and will never buy one again.

I now have my second Ford, and I have never had any problems and will stick with them.

1994 Dodge Caravan from North America

Summary:

Nice, reliable van for the money

Faults:

In the last couple of years the engine has begun randomly dying when coming to a stop or slowing down to make a turn. It doesn't do this all the time, although it seems to happen more in hot or cold weather. We have done close to $1,000 in tune ups and repairs, but the problem still exists. We changed the spark plugs and wires, the EGR valve, the fuel filter, flushed the fuel system and I don't remember what else.

The A/C went out shortly after we purchased the van. We need a new compressor to fix the problem, but we decided not to get it fixed.

General Comments:

We purchased the van for $4000 and have driven it for five years and 45,000 miles. Excluding the problems already mentioned it has been extremely reliable. We have driven around town and across the United States with absolutely no problems. The engine power is surprisingly powerful.

We don't like to spend money on cars so features like power windows, sound system and a more than adequate comfort level are not a big deal to us as they might be to other people. To be honest, I've always thought the van is kind of ugly, but it gets us from point A to point B.

On the whole it has been great, although we are trading it in since we haven't been able to get the stalling problem fixed.

1994 Dodge Caravan ES 3.3 from North America

Summary:

This van is SO much better than my 1990 Voyager was

Faults:

I have only had one problem. I had to replace the serpentine belt when my son buried it in a snowbank. All I have done is routine maintenance (replace lights, oil & filter, etc.). No transmission problems like my 1990 Voyager had.

General Comments:

I am a musician and sometimes travel long distances. The vehicle has to be reliable. It is. Wish it got 40 mpg, but it is between 20 & 25, depending on the season. It always starts.

1994 Dodge Caravan 4.0 from North America

Summary:

Poor quality vehicle plagued with issues

Faults:

1996- transmission went out. Repair mechanic stated internal part that is not meant to wear was in pieces, traveled through system, damaged other parts. 1997- 39000 miles, engine began to leak oil, a/c went out, same part in transmission broke, again. Interior headliner started to pull loose, sags. Paint started to fade on roof, rear tail lift, and lid of vehicle. Passenger side airbag leaking, damaging panel-recall did not cover repair. Back seat uncomfortable, unsafe in recline position.

General Comments:

Although this vehicle feels and sounds solid, mechanical issues and safety points do not warranty investing in same again.

1994 Dodge Caravan Grand LE 3.3 from North America

Summary:

This vehicle has been very reliable and comfortable to drive

Faults:

The transmission had to be replaced at 172,000 km. Cost $4000 cdn.

The interior trim has broken on the rear lift-gate, and lift-gate doorjam.

The interior trim has broken on the side sliding door!

The paint has peeled on the roof and is starting to rust along the roof racks.

General Comments:

This vehicle has been very reliable and comfortable to drive. Other than the transmission, it has never let me or my family down. However, now that the Japanese have improved their vans, I'm not convinced that I would buy another Chrysler as I don't think they have the same quality built into them today.
