1988 Dodge Colt E from North America

Summary:

A wonderful car that is very cheap to maintain

Faults:

The seats in the car began to wear out after several years. The blower stopped working at 266,000 miles. The engine blew up when it reached 270,000 miles.

General Comments:

The Dodge Colt is a very reliable car. It lasted me 270k miles. I recieved it from my dad after I received my license last year. If I could find another Colt for sale, I would buy it.

1988 Dodge Colt 1.5l from North America

Summary:

The Colt is a great car, more than meeting a person's driving needs

Faults:

I bought the car from a friend who was the original owner and had purchased the car when she was in college. It ran fine when I bought it, and aside from new tires, brake pads, batteries, and tune-up parts, the only parts previously replaced were the driver-side drive shaft and the timing belt.

The choke wasn't working and required quite a bit of cleaning before it performed properly.

The mechanical fuel pump failed a month after I purchased the car (140k miles).

To insure reliability for some trips across the country, I replaced the the radiator with a new one (old one had a crack that was fixed with solder).

I also replaced the head-gasket, water-pump, timing belt (first done at 95k, now at 140k), exhaust manifold which had a crack on the engine side, and exhaust flex pipe which was leaking.

The vacuum lines were nearly all clogged as was the EGR valve. They were cleaned or replaced.

Two of the vacuum control solenoids were also leaking and were replace.

The Secondary Air Control Valve (exhaust manifold to air filter) was leaking and after many hours checking salvage yards a replacement was found.

General Comments:

The car is very easy to work on, and inexpensive to maintain. It has a large amount of interior space for it's size, gets great gas mileage (about 40 mpg Highway, 35 mpg city), and because it's light, it has plenty of power. And it especially handles beautifully in the snow and slick conditions.

1988 Dodge Colt E 1.5L from North America

Summary:

Bargain, great performance if it stays working for you

Faults:

Car was great until 3 weeks ago. My engine fried itself when a radiator hose blew.

Have to say an engine should not blow up at 80000 miles. I know I'm severe driver, but not that hard on a car that it will blow then.

General Comments:

Extremely fun car to drive with 205's for wheels, the thing is glued to the road, and is very quick for such a small underpowered car.

I have an 88 and an 89 Colt, base models both. Between the two of them, I have over 600K miles on them. I'm doing a complete restoration of the 88 at this time; then I'll do the 89. I plan to keep both for a very long time. Little Mitsu 4-banger is a wonderful little powerplant that gets excellent mileage.

I bought an 88 Colt 1.5l with 139K miles, and drove around the country for a few months. It's a great car, very straight forward and dependable. The biggest weakness seems to be the tendency to crack exhaust manifolds.

1988 Dodge Colt DL 1.5 gasoline from North America

Summary:

A great little city commuter

Faults:

An oil pump went early, and the seat belt had a recall, in which the dealer installed a buckle that was a "close" match, I think the prescription for his eye glasses was also "close" if you hear me.

General Comments:

An awesome little car.

Engine by Mitsubishi, keeps on going, the one constant that always picked up my buddies when their lemons broke down.

Kind of a bumpy ride, but you can't ask for everything when getting 420km to a tank on a 2 barrel carbed car.

New paint and rims and she keeps on going. Just make sure to feed her the expendibles when she wants. Eg: oil, plugs, filters, caps, rotors, and she will treat you well.
