1987 Dodge Daytona Pacifica 4 cylinder turbo from North America

Summary:

Well worth the hunt

Faults:

Bent fly wheel upon purchase.

Break in the brake lines after a few months.

Bald front tires were replaced.

No pressure in the hatchback hydraulic lifters. The hatchback is very heavy to lift.

Shocks went out and required replacing.

General Comments:

I love this car!

I spent several months searching for an affordable Dodge Daytona. Finally, after three months searching I found this gem for $900. It was well worth the hunt.

Despite its problems, the car is very reliable in general. It has never broken down or had trouble starting. It always gets me through long road trips.

The general condition of the car is remarkably good. The body has no rust at all except for a little spot on the hood. The interior is likewise in great shape. The car looks and feels so clean. It's something easy to be proud of.

The interior is very comfortable. The electric powered driver's seat features many functions.

The engine is pretty powerful for a four cylinder turbo. It's more powerful than my old LeBaron. A fast car with a lot of power can be very useful. Performance is definitely a plus here.

1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z 2.2L turbo from North America

Summary:

High performance out of a 4 cylinder

Faults:

The shifter became disconnected from the tranny.

I had to put an exhaust on when I purchased it.

The guy I bought it from did work on the tranny and didn't put oil back into it, so I had to replace that after running it for 600 miles with no oil.

General Comments:

Has 10 hp less than my '88 Sunbird with custom turbo, but that was an auto, the Daytona is faster than the Sunbird was.

The car is real fast and I love the sound of the turbo as I accelerate.

I've always wanted a Daytona, but got a deal with the Sunbird so this time the Daytona is all I was looking for.

I'm disappointed that they stopped making the Daytona, but it will make mine more of a classic in a few years.

1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z 2.2 intercooled turbo H.O. 200 from North America

Summary:

Pocket rocket that still looks great almost 15 years later

Faults:

A snap ring failed at 50,000 miles causing wear in a cylinder wall. Really sad consider it was a five cent part. Had to replace the block. Sadly the mechanic over tightened the transmission at the main seal when replacing it and it leaked. Took the car to another mechanic to fix the leak and he messed up the wiring.

Only problem with the car other than the 5 cent snap ring that holds the piston rod from sliding, has been the poor quality repair work given to it.

When the block was replaced I also replaced the turbo since metal from the snap ring was in the oil. I didn't want to take any chances. I also had a new water pump put on, since this had to be removed to change the block. Also went ahead and put a new clutch in since the motor was out. The car did not need these things replaced, but I felt it was best to do that while I had access.

Car has been garaged every winter and has never been repainted. It is black with grey interior. Every option including factory compact disc player.

My favorite feature is the enthusiast driver's seat.

No Camaro or Mustang owner takes the car seriously until they are looking at its taillights.

I love the way Chrysler understated its potential on the 87 to 88 years with a small badge on the rear and on the side window trim. I have never seen one around that year in better condition.

General Comments:

Car handles like a go-kart and is seriously quick with tons of torque going through those front wheels. The rare factory strut brace improves handling.

1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z 2.2 turbo intercooled from North America

Summary:

A rocket that will blow away cars 5 times its price

Faults:

Electrical system has its frustrating moments.

Water pump.

Clogged catalyst, but put a 2.5" exhaust on it now which is an improvement over stock.

General Comments:

Car is very fun to drive, very, very fast, take it over any Mustang.

Lustfull exhaust note, turns many heads, T-tops are great to have, will blow away modified Civic Si's in races many times over, same with other Japanese cars.

I bought a 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby-Z about 7 years ago. It was extremely unreliable. However it was my favorite car. I often beat mustangs and camaros in highway races. I am thinking about finding another one just like it. Hope I'll have better luck.
