1999 Dodge Durango SLT 5.2L from North America

Summary:

Nice, but a crappy transmission

Faults:

Well let's see; about 10000 miles ago, my Durango was having trouble shifting from 2nd to 3rd when it was cold out. We took it to a Dodge dealer and they said transmission problem; gonna cost 4000 to fix.

We took it to another place and they said it's a very common problem for this model. They said the O rings in there shrink when cold, then seal when warm. Well wouldn't you know, today my wife is driving to work and boom out goes the tranny. 2500 dollars to fix; not sure what I'm gonna do.

General Comments:

All in all, I like my Durango, but wish I would have known about these problems.

1999 Dodge Durango SLT 5.2 gas from North America

Summary:

The Durango is absolutely the best vehicle I have owned

Faults:

At 140,000 we had to tune up the Durango.

At 170,000 we had to replace the water pump.

At 180,000 we had to replace the ball joints.

General Comments:

This is the best vehicle I have ever owned.

The interior and exterior are still just like new.

The money we have spent on it is very low for the miles.

The interior is very comfortable and seats eight people very well. It is one of the few vehicles available with seat belts and seating for eight people.

1999 Dodge Durango SLT 5.2 Magnum from North America

Summary:

It's a good truck

Faults:

Had a simple little fuse go out at 93.000 miles.

Water pump went out at 103.000.

No other problems.

General Comments:

I feel the owners who complain about their Durangos don't take care of them. My Dad bought this new for my mom when we lived in San Fransisco, they changed the oil every 3k miles and preformed general maintenance at the suggested times. Never left us stranded. Prefect oil pressure, doesn't leak or burn oil. Never any transmission/engine problems. They decided to give it to me so I would get rid of my very tired old Lexus. I keep the service up as they did. Just if you look to buy one of these, make sure its maintained.

Extremely easy to drive, its about as easy as driving a compact car.

You can always buy a car and not maintain it, but don't blame the manufacturer if you have problems, they tell you to do maintenance for a reason, and it saves you money in the long run.I'm not saying you have to pay the dealer, we have never once took it back to a Dodge dealer.

I plan to go out and buy a brand new one once this one is around 12.

1999 Dodge Durango SLT Plus 5.2 Liter V8 from North America

Summary:

Reliable 4x4

Faults:

Since I've had the car, it has only been normal wear and tear.

I had to replace the 4x4 switch at about 132,000 miles, so that when I switched into four wheel drive, the light would illuminate on the dashboard; only cost $50.

I also had to replace the battery and alternator at about 135,000 miles.

Then it needed a full tune-up at about 142,000 miles; once again wear and tear.

At 147,000 miles I had to have the turn signal switch replaced, which was about $250.

Then at about 148,000 miles, I had to replace the heater core; the most expensive repair costing $900.

All the repairs I've made have been normal for a car that is almost 10 years old, and has that many miles. Other than that, only regular services.

General Comments:

Overall I am very happy with this car. Living in an area with rough winter weather, the four wheel drive is very nice to have.

I have been putting synthetic oil in the vehicle, which is supposed to prolong engine life, and it has made the car run really well.

The only thing I notice is now that it has 152,000 miles on it, the car is seeming tired and does not have the horsepower it once had.

I am not afraid to drive the truck long distances and it has never left me stranded.

I would love for it to get a little better gas mileage; I usually average about 13 MPG, and I'm a college student.
