1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 liter from North America

Summary:

I would not recommend buying this type of car

Faults:

The back drivers window will only roll down once in awhile. The front driver's window had to be totally replaced. It kept rolling up off track until it finally shattered.

The rotors and brakes have been the most troublesome problem. It caused the brakes to go out suddenly, and the tires to go bald quickly. It forced us to have to put up with a very bad wobble from the tire and the steering wheel for the longest time until we could afford to fix it. Thank goodness we did not have to totally replace the rotors because the parts are extremely expensive.

One of the ignition coils went bad. We replaced it, but the problem was not fixed completely because it caused the corresponding cylinder to become poor. And I am sure that is due to the fact that the check engine light took so long to come on before we new that the coil had ruined.

The transmission seems to shift hard, but after getting it checked out, they found nothing to be wrong.

The exhaust smokes (which may be as a result of the ignition coil).

It's hard to clean the front and back windshields because they are so big.

General Comments:

I do find some aspects of the Intrepid to be satisfying. It has a very sporty look to it. The lights are bright and work well. The front seats, back seats, and trunk are all very spacious. The air, heater, and stereo works extremely good. And it has decent power when working properly.

1999 Dodge Intrepid ES 2.7 from North America

Summary:

Intermittent problems, but overall satisfied

Faults:

Twice I have had the car in for computer chip problems. The speedometer, odometer and transmission stopped working.

Driver's side window motor repaired once. Continuing problems with rattling in that door. Speaker buzzes in that door.

Car shakes sometimes at high speeds, despite new tires and front end alignment. It also shakes when stopping rapidly. Dealer says there is no problem.

Went through a two week period where lights inside car, including dash lights, would intermittently flash. Could not reproduce at dealership. Weather was very wet at the time it was happening, and we have not had that kind of weather since.

General Comments:

Very comfortable, albeit a little noisy. Lots of room!

Not being able to see over the hood took some adjusting. Hard to see over the back when in reverse too.

All in all, not a bad car. I just wish I could resolve the shaking problem.

I would add that the shaking problem is a tire balance problem, not an alignment problem. Have your tires balanced and the problem should clear.

I have a 2000 Chrysler Intrepid ES. Love the car! The only major complaint I have is the rotors. Had to have the rotors replaced at 37,000 km, which is totally ridiculous. When I talked to Chrysler, I was told it was due to the way they are manufactured now. They are making them so thin and light to enable better gas mileage. Think I could buy a lot of gas for the cost of new rotors every 37,000 km! I feel this is a manufacturing problem they should have a recall on, the consumer should not have to pick up the tab for something that was poorly engineered in the first place. Other than this complaint, it's a great car! A little noisy because of "road noise" you hear inside, but no other problems.

I would just like to add that I have a 2000 ES, the road noise is common throughout all Chrysler & dodge products w/cab forward design. I read in consumer reports magazine that all of the dodge intrepid from '96 on have had this problem. Also, the shaking in the front of the car may be due to a warped rotor. Because the rotors are designed and manufactured cheaper and lighter when you apply the brakes they heat up quickly... should you then go through a puddle the rotor will warp causing a shaking in the front when applying brakes.

I am not sure when this was posted. For the random flashing of your interior lights. My Intrepid was in the shop for the same thing. They ended up finding out that there was a short in the headlight.
