2009 Dodge Journey SXT from North America

Summary:

There are way better options out there

Faults:

2 major problems. The rocker arms basically fall apart every 50,000 K. They don't wear, they literally break, so obviously a faulty design. The first time it happened, I had everything replaced and upgraded and it cost a few grand. It has just happened again. I will have only what is absolutely necessary replaced and then I'm getting rid of this lemon.

The second problem was a doozy and happened as I was on a road trip. After a few thousand km, I noticed a gas leak (!) after leaving a gas station. I was in the middle of the mountains, the next closest garage was another 100 km. I brought it straight there. They weren't able to look at it for another 1.5 hours so I parked it in the lot. During that time, as I had walked away from the vehicle, it really started to spill and the fire dept was called. When the mechanic called me, he told me that the wrong exhaust had been put on the car and it had slowly been melting the gas tank. I felt lucky to be alive. I have not had any exhaust work done so this was done before I bought the car. I'm amazed (naive?) that the Dodge dealership didn't catch this. The mechanic had called Dodge and they said they had never heard of this happening. And the brakes do need to be done way too often.

What engine - 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder?

2009 Dodge Journey CRD/RT 2.0 TDI from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Does the job

Faults:

Central locking disabled on driver's door only, lock replaced. Cost £400 including fitting.

Other than that, nothing.

General Comments:

The Volkswagen 2.0 turbo diesel engine makes 138 BHP, which is more powerful than it sounds in real world driving. It's a noisy engine and can get very wearing on long trips, especially high speed motorway. If it had a V6 diesel it would have been a Mercedes beater, which is a shame because there is acres of space inside, and it's great for kids, which is why we bought it. The auto box is eccentric; it works well enough, but is geared too low, so in town driving and crawling in traffic, it throws you around with its clunking, but you get used to driving it 'on the throttle' and compensate for the snatching.

Overall it's done us proud; it handles long distance work well enough apart from the aforementioned diesel thrumming. It's reasonably economical, 32 MPG at a steady 90mph is possible, and around 22 constant town driving.

I shall probably run it into the ground, as it cost £23K to buy brand new, and I always like to get my money's worth out of a car.

Servicing costs about £200 a year, which is great. And the Kumho tyres have lasted until 40000 miles, so can't complain.

2009 Dodge Journey Base 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Brake eater

Faults:

The engine in this crossover is small and under powered, but it works OK.

The major issues:

Brakes, brakes, brakes, and just to top it off, BRAKES!

Rear rotor drag happening. Afraid the back tires will burst into flames.

Tires are horrible. Worn out already at 30000 Miles.

General Comments:

This is last, final Dodge I'm ever going to own.

I had a Dodge Caravan at one time; that was a lemon, and I vowed then not to buy Dodge. But with a brain fart and an attitude that Dodge may have gotten better, I bought from them again.

Stupid mistake, this Journey eats up brakes and rotors every 10000 miles it seems. I bought it with 29000 miles on it, and it needed all new brakes, and now at 39000 miles it needs brakes again! And that includes the rear brakes.

Along with that, my REAR tires are shot. On a front wheel drive car. The only reason the front are not bad, is because the tires were changed before I purchased it.

How come American car makers can't get it right?

Get a 4-wheel alignment, and make sure someone isn't riding the brakes like some annoying people do.
