1995 Dodge Neon from North America

Summary:

You Be the Judge Here

Faults:

I am going to start off by saying I really cannot give a fair review of the Neon as I bought it off of my dad's estate with about 210,000 km's. I can say that in the 2 years I did own it numerous things did go wrong with it. Here is a list:

Blown Head Gasket

Blown Transmission

Leaked about 2 quarts of oil per week

Water pump broke

Air Conditioner did not work

The coolant hose blew

The speedometer and fuel meters stopped working

A wheel-bearing broke.

Probably was more that I have either forgotten about or was never diagnosed on the car.

All I can say is the car did last me for 2 years, albeit with a very large repair bill. I do know that my father had sued the dealership soon after purchasing it brand new so there must have been something else wrong with the car a few years back.

General Comments:

All in all I really have to keep a neutral view on the car. I do not think it would be fair of me to judge it when I purchased it with such high mileage. Would I buy another one? Absolutely not! But this is very much due to the poor reviews I have read about the car in both this site and Consumer Reports.

1995 Dodge Neon Sport 2.0 SOHC from North America

Summary:

If they still made it, I'd buy another; really under-rated

Faults:

Head gasket, replaced under warranty, 60,000 miles. Turn signal switch, replaced under warranty, 35,000 miles. Air conditioner evaporator, 120,000 miles.

General Comments:

One of the most fun cars I've ever had - it was just very enjoyable to drive, nicely balanced, yet quite roomy inside. Very good value for the money and terribly reliable. Never ate oil - changed every six or seven months witih standard dino juice, and never was low; engine clean after more than ten years. Drove on rather nasty streets, lots of potholes, yet front brake pads lasted through 95,000 miles (rears were original) and when sold at 121,000 it was still on its second pair of tires! (Yes, they were about ready to be replaced). All that and 34 mpg on the highway. Loved that car, but when the evaporator went, I upgraded to a PT Cruiser GT.

1995 Dodge Neon Sport 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Just say Hi to Neon! Great car!

Faults:

Rear fuel pump failed, at about 70K.

No other problems.

General Comments:

It's AMAZING. The car that Chairman Lee said Chrysler couldn't build; and managed to.

The Neon was quite a good looking car, was interested ever since I first saw it in 1992, at the Auto show. The final product wasn't quite as nice looking, but was a nice car to own.

The downside - it was cheaply made. The plastic on the dash reflected horribly on the windshield. It sorta made you keep the dash dirty, to cut down on the wicked glare. The door panels were also VERY hard cheap looking plastic.

Other than those minor gripes, the car was GREAT to own. Ran trouble free for 70K, with the fuel pump; once fixed the car ran for another 35K before struts/tires/brakes needing replacement.

Overall it was a great car!
