I have a 1997 Neon as well, and it is a fairly well known fact that if you rip on the car hard once or twice (burn out, etc.) the ecu thinks that there's something wrong and puts on the service engine light. If you drive it nicely after that, the ecu will realise that there's nothing wrong and the light will turn off after a couple days, or a long highway trip (couple hours or more of straight highway driving). Don't worry about it, I trigger mine all the time :D.

I had the same problem with my 96 Neon. Take your car to an auto parts store and they can run a free test on it to determine why the light is on. Mine was due to the Oxygen Sensor and EGR Value.
