1986 Dodge Ram 50 Custom 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Big truck in a little body

Faults:

Distributor magnetic pickup just went out.

Needs a new fuel tank.

Needs the tranny rebuilt.

Needs carrier and universal bearings.

General Comments:

These trucks are great. I own several; an 83, 85, 86 and an 88 4x4.

Fuel mileage is good considering how heavy these little trucks are. Average weight is 3600 lbs.

I just rebuilt the motor in my 86, and you wanna talk about having power. Just a little more work and I will have a brand new truck again.

I have had too many people asking me why I keep sinking money into these trucks, because they are so old, and I tell them all, own one and you won't ever want to get rid of it.

"Average weight is 3600 lbs."

Oh, really... that's more than the curb weight of a full-sized Dodge Ram pickup of the same year. That sticker on the driver's door that says "GVWR" is NOT referring to curb weight. Your truck is about 1000 lbs lighter than you think, maybe more, depending on how rusty it is.

Yes these trucks are great. I just bought an 86 Power Ram. That truck runs and drives great.

1986 Dodge Ram 318 V8 from North America

Summary:

An excellent work truck, and an awesome daily driver

Faults:

When I first got it, the starter would get hot after being driven, which caused it to not start until it cooled down.

A few months after I got it, the tail lights developed a short, which caused the driver's side tail light to only work every once in a while.

A couple weeks after the tail light developed a short, the interior lighting and dash lights quit working.

A few months ago, the transmission started slipping.

Last week, the engine developed an overheating problem.

General Comments:

All in all, this truck has been a good work truck. It does need repairs like the engine and transmission, but it's not a bad truck.

I have all of the lights working now, and the starter problem is fixed.

This truck is very reliable, and makes a good work truck and daily driver.

I will get the engine and transmission problems fixed soon and I might add a shift kit just to beef it up a little.

After all, it is an old Dodge, and I plan on keeping her forever just to show the Chevy and Ford boys a Dodge can be just as reliable.

If that is a reliable truck, I would eat my 2 gallon Texas stetson!
