Don't get me wrong, I love 1st gen Eagle Talons, especially all wheel drive, but one of the fastest if not the fastest Eagle Talon can't beat a mustang, I'm not saying it can't beat any, just not all. If you want to talk crap, just get on youtube and watch John Shepherd who drives a 7.7 1st gen Talon at 191mph get beat by a Mustang. It costs money to go fast, and whoevers got the most money goes faster.
Also, I like all cars, not trying to be biased in my comment.

No matter what, you can always extract more power out of a V8. Remember, there's no replacement for displacement. Supercharging a 281 will give you close to a ground pounding 400 horse at about 4000 4500 dollars. Now the 4g63 2.0 liter is a pretty mighty little motor, but I'm not so sure if 4000 to 4500 dollars will quite cut the bill to produce the same kind of horse power, RELIABLY especially.
And let's also not forget the sheer fun factor of having 400 horse in a RWD vs a AWD or even FWD.
Just my 2 cents from having owned both vehicles at one time or another.

OK LOL, wow well I have 2 95 TSi right now, and I have had many Mustangs in my day, and yeah boost is good for the TSi and the AWD is great, but if you get a good hook up and a lot of money in a Mustang, it will out run it. I haven't found one in my town yet to do so, but they're out there, and all I have done to the Talon is turbo header, t26 turbo, BOV, 3 inch piping, and a lot of motor work. I'm not running no 9 seconds like all these wannabes say they are, but I have time slips showing me running 10.8, and I have beat many Cobras.

What's that?? Oh yeah, Eagle has ceased to exist for how long now and you're still coming on here to defend them against the Mustang, which is still in production and now over 400 hp stock while turning .94g's on the skidpad... again stock. Funny thing is now even the V-6 Mustang will waste any Talon stock to stock. I wonder why they stopped making Talon's? Maybe they weren't as reliable as you think? They are based on second grade Mitsubishi parts, so it's no wonder they don't make them anymore.

I partly agree with the above commentor. The Eagle Talon was junk. My personal opinion. Everyone is entitled to theirs.
That being said, I'm not a big fan of the Mustang either. Sure it's powerful, and somehow Ford managed to make a Mustang that can handle as well, but it still doesn't get me too excited. I don't really like the look of it. Out of the new age muscle cars, I love the Dodge Challenger. I know it doesn't compete with the Mustang or Camaro in performance, but for the most original looks, it wins hands down. It'll also destroy any Talon out there.

Man, these comments really make me happy to be buying my 91 Talon TSI AWD. When I upgrade the turbo, throw on a exhaust, B.O.V, intercooler etc, etc... For about 6k, I'll smoke any Mustang out there. If you wanna race at Race City next season for a couple G's, get at me.

Okay first of all, the reason Eagle Talons were discontinued was Mitsubishi Motors bought the 50% of Diamond Star Motors from Chrysler and just didn't wanna share the profit any more after 1998. so they made only Eclipses. I've owned 4 Mustangs and I'm on my 17th DSM (95 Talon TSI) and it outperforms any Mustang I've ever seen, including the Shelby and Saleen my brother has.
To the guy who's spending 6k on a turbo setup I ask you why? It doesn't cost that much if you do it right (or know someone with all the parts you want) 8109415073.

Stock to stock, the Talon never really outperformed the Mustang, and at most was around the same in most areas. AWD helped in the handling dept. but they weren't quite as quick as a Mustang, so there wasn't any huge advantage. I sure wasn't getting wasted by any Talons while I had my two 5.0's back in the 90's. These were Mitsubishi Eclipses rebadged, and the quality level was pretty low on them. Timing belt failures routinely trashed the engines on these cars, and they were pretty expensive to fix even without the turbo.
I love how people come onto sites like this and claim their car will beat other cars... their HEAVILY MODIFIED car. Anyone can bolt on parts to make any car much faster than stock. Take the 5.0 Mustang and bolt on a supercharger, and instantly you gain 45% more hp or about 320 hp total. Torque would be approaching 400 lb. ft. as well. Put a good set of tires on it and you'll waste any Talon out there with it.
I'd take the Mustang well before the Talon, for a long lasting hard driving car you can have serious fun with, and build up easily and inexpensively without compromising the integrity of your powertrain. Not sure why people are so compelled to squeeze so much power out of a little four banger, pushing it well beyond its tolerance levels just to go faster. It gets expensive when you start blowing engines!

OK, first of all Mustangs do not suck. If they did they wouldn't still be around today. Your 71 charger with a Hemi, well they stopped making those years ago, now I am not saying anything bad about Chargers, they are very nice cars, but yeah of course a 71 Charger with a 440 big block would beat a Mustang with a 281 small block, and with all the emissions restrictions and rules today compared to the lack of them back in 71, it's a given.
Now as far as your problem with your Talon, I know you're not running 0-60 in 4-5, all you have is a aftermarket inter-cooler, that's not enough for that fast of a car. You're putting yourself up there with stock Ferrari's and Lamborghini's, which have a V10 or even V12.
