1990 Ford Aerostar XLT 4.0 V6 from North America

Summary:

A great family van, that won't break the bank

Faults:

Power steering pressure line cracked; $25 CDN for the part. Took 15 minutes to install it.

Power locks stopped working. Blown relay.

AC needs a recharge. After about 3 months of ownership. Freon is unavailable in Canada. Way too expensive to get it converted. Almost 2000.00. Not worth it in BC.

General Comments:

This car rides as good as my Grand Marquis.

It has excellent power and towing capacity. Two trips across Canada towing a 19ft trailer.

It handles like a car, and has the room of a bus.

Great gas mileage.

Major complaint is any repair is expensive due to the engine config. Spark plug change is 2.5 hours by the book.

Not a easy vehicle to work on for the novice.

I would buy another in a second, although this one has lots of life left.

It was repainted a year ago, due to the fact it got keyed in the parking lot. But the factory paint looked good up until then.

1990 Ford Aerostar cargo 3.0 from North America

Summary:

Pretty good design, if Ford would've used better materials this vehicle would be a collectable

Faults:

Fuel pump failed at 250,000.

A/c blower motor at 105,000 and 210,000.

Batteries every 3 years.

Vacumn modulator on transmission 150,000.

Front brakes, every 35,000.

Plastic bumpers cracked and now falling apart in chunks.

General Comments:

Don't let this engine run hot.

I change the oil religiously at 3,000 miles.

I t still runs good, doesn't burn oil, and gets 18.5 mpg.

I have owned 3 of these, this year has lasted the longest.

Has been the most reliable car I have ever owned probably because I have taken care of it.

Driver's seat belt won't stay buckled.

The window just behind the driver's seat leaked during the second rain storm.

The wiper switch also went out during the first rain storm. It kept going and would not shut off. Then would come on whenever it wanted to. Dealer no longer makes the part.

Front speakers crackle and pop.

General Comments:

Goes up a hill better than my last Ford Mustang 5.0.

Has lot's of power.

Try checking your transmission mount. My 88 clunks from a broken mount. You can also try an additive like Greased Lightning (smoothed out my shifts) Hope this helps.

1990 Ford Aerostar AWD, reg-length from North America

Summary:

Good tower/hauler, rusts badly and quickly

Faults:

Rust along the bottom of the door in only a few years.

General Comments:

Good towing power with either the 3.0L or 4.0L V6. Lots of room.

Rides very harsh.

Quality of the interior is pretty bad.

These Aerostars had serious body rust problems, so expect any northern-driven one to be or get pretty bad.
