1991 Ford Capri from North America

Summary:

I like the car because with its relatively small engine, it is peppy and economical on gas

Faults:

My Capri had not been used for approximately 8 months. The gas tank had to be removed and replaced with a rust free one, and a new fuel pump.

The computer was bad and replaced with a used one.

Brakes were locked up from sitting, and we used a "C" clamp to push the brake pistons back to free the wheels to turn.

Alternator is apparently bad, and I have it off the engine, but am having trouble getting it out of the engine compartment. Not enough room!

I could not get the top down until I read several answers on how to do it. I release the top at the front by opening the two hold down handles, then lift front of the top slightly with left hand and push the rear of the top back toward the trunk until it slides out of the groove that retains it. Raise the section, the one with the window, up and lay it on the rearmost bow.

Open the storage compartment lid, using the lower release on the drivers door post. Open the storage cover all the way. Lower the top window into the storage compartment, and the rest of the top, until its almost in. IT WON'T GO ALL THE WAY DOWN UNTIL YOU MOVE THE ROUND TOP BOW CLOSEST TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR TO THE REAR!!! THE TOP CAN THEN BE LOWERED THE REST OF THE WAY INTO THE STORAGE COMPARTMENT. The secret is moving that front top bow to the rear. Then close the storage compartment lid and you're done.

1991 Ford Capri 1.6 turbo from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Quick for a cheap car

Faults:

The headlights bulb broke numerous times.

The gearbox fell through.

The alternator isn't working properly.

General Comments:

It is a rather sporty car for the time and certainly for a 1600cc turbo fwd car. It is quick around the corners and gets to 100km/h in about 6.5 seconds which is smiler tho the Lotus Elan. The only bad things about the car are really that it is fwd and can't get quick take off and that the parts are starting to fall apart, break etc.

1991 Ford Capri 1.6 DOHC from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A rattlebox

Faults:

Shock absorbers at front played up.

Driver's window regulator motor packed up at 160km.

Clock light stopped working.

Many rattles.

General Comments:

Totally gutless car, much worse than I had expected. I usually drive autos because I hate manuals, but this car was seriously slow to go anywhere. Totally depressing to drive with the roof on as one rattle after another could be heard. Take the roof off and the car is a dream. Was a second car and could not bear to drive it at night or on cold days due to sluggish speed and non-stop rattles. No interior light or demister can frustrate with soft roof. Roof has tendency to tear at joins, was replaced once. A lot of interior trim components very cheap and fall off or start rattling. Very disappointed in the general build quality.
