1991 Ford Escort LX from North America

Summary:

High

Faults:

The alternator had to be replaced once.

The rear wheels were getting jammed and the brakes/drums had to be replaced at 70,000 miles.

Its hard going up a hill and accelarating now. Maybe because the engine is getting old. The engine seems to be making a rattling sound after 60,000 miles. Whenever it goes over pot-holes it bumps like something is going to fall apart and the steering rattles... maybe the shock absorbers are gone. Coolant light comes on and goes even though there is nothing wrong with it.

General Comments:

Runs like a dog without much maintenance and repairs. The general maintenance I do is oil changes and air filter change. I have also had the transmission oil change done once. The seats are very comfortable. The brakes seem to have become weak although they don't screech. I have driven the car in Iowa, Toronto, New York City and all over New Jersey. Runs in all types of weather conditions and roads. Starts up even after leaving it for a few months when I go on vacations.

1991 Ford Escort GT 1.8 from North America

Summary:

Not bad for $1500.00 CAN

Faults:

The first thing that went wrong is the gas tank at 131000 km. Repair cost $100.

Next was the automatic seat belt at 131000km. Repair cost $40.

Next was synchro rings in the transmission. Not fixed yet, too much $. 132000km.

Timing belt at 133000km, $100.

Engine belt at 133001km, $35.

New exhaust at 133002km, $200.

And the latest thing to go wrong is the head lights. They turn off when you use the blinkers. At 152000km. Not fixed.

General Comments:

The car has been good till now and I'll fix it. I'm going to add a 20 psi turbo to it for $5000 Can. to rebuild the motor and custom fabricate the needed parts to attach the turbo to it.

p.s. $5000 CDN not US. It will give it 300 or so horsepower. If not fast enough, I'll go with 2 turbos.

1991 Ford Escort LX 1.9 from North America

Summary:

This had to be the most economical and dependable and reliable car I've ever owned, bar none

Faults:

-Just recently, the transmission finally went out on it after a 7hour run in high temperatures trying to go up a very steep hill.

-Mostly a bit of rust damage due to high levels of salt used on Canadian roads. Rear doors on sedan model wouldn't open anymore.

-Alarm kept going off when the door was open.

-Replaced the usual parts, muffler (x2),radiator, generator, battery, tires, etc.

-Replaced front tie rods 3 times.

-Fan motor switches broken.

General Comments:

Zippy enough, except when heavily loaded down.

Easily pulled a small trailer.

Not much power when going up hills though, and especially not when the A/C is on.

Big drawback is lack of room. Fits 4 adults and one child (or dog). Not much cargo space, however, with the back seats folded down it can accommodate surprisingly large or long loads.

1991 Ford Escort L 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Low performance

Faults:

Brake pads and discs needed changing immiditly.

Alarm and immobilizer were very dodgy.

Alternator and automatic choke was weak.

General Comments:

This car is very weak and I think it should be illegal for anyone to drive it.

Comfort isn't too bad, but it is very unreliable.

1991 Ford Escort LX 1.9 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

A very good car for going on short trips, but not the best choice for a family

Faults:

The timing belt snapped at about 110,000.

The check coolant light comes on at random.

The A/C brought the condensation water inside the car and dripped it all over the floor on the passenger side.

General Comments:

This car is very reliable, pretty quick, and a little uncomfortable on long trips.

It's very good for maneuvering in tight spots. It's very nimble in city traffic and has good visibility.

However, there are some better choices for winter driving.
