Escort GTI only has 115BHP. It will not do 146 MPH. It will take at least 170+ BHP to achieve those speeds. Just look at Type Rs with 200 BHP. They have listed top speed of 147 MPH so do you really think yours will do that? It won't. Your speedo is over reading by miles if it shows it.

Can anyone help? I've got £1200, I've just previously owned a 1.6 Zetec-S, and now am looking to buy a GTi Escort. Will I be as pleased with the GTi as I was the Fiesta Zetec-S mk5? All replies will be helpful thanks.

Well I own a GTi, and I smoked a VTR not long ago, and the GTi looks a lot better than a Saxo.

Hey mate, it's either the crankcase breather valve and pipes, or the auto choke etc. Could also be an idle control valve.

For the comment about the front brakes. The Mondeo / Focus ST route is the best way to go. You'll need calipers and carriers with the bolts from a Mk3 Mondeo, with pads to fit the same car. The discs come from the Focus ST170, and the brake hoses from a Mk2 V6 Mondeo. Some washers for spacing and a 12mm drill bit. Once all fitted, they will go under some 16 inch wheels like Mondeo 5 spokes, and obviously under 17's like on mine. You'll be pleased with the result. Mine stops on on penny.

Hi there. I have a GTi with induction kit, Peco exhaust, remap and chipped, and I get 135mph out of mine, 0 to 60 in 6.9 seconds, and it wees all over my mate's Insignia SRi.

I've just purchased a 1997 3dr GTi, for the tidy sum of 500, and she is in lovely condition with 89,000 on the clock.
It's running nice and tight. I've had 135 out of her, and she's still a fast car, and pips my mate's VTS.
It still looks good, I've lowered mine 40 mm with tints, it's in moon dust silver, and looks great.
Yes, they should have upped the power at the factory to 150bhp. I mean they have called it the GTi!!! So they should have made it a stonker, but they have the RS line for that, and the XR3i, so if you want more, look at the RS 2000 at 150bhp, or the XR3i mk5, but don't blink at the GTi, cos with some little mods, it can become a worthy contender.
I've put in a K&N and chip, full SS exhaust, and it really works well. You can push 'em to the 140mph mark. They like the high revs, and peak at 6000rpm, so use the gears and plant it in upper revs, and you will blow the VTS/VTRs, and a lot more away.

To the guy who has diving to the right when accelerating; I have just started experiencing the same problem. The tyre on the same corner is rapidly wearing on the outside edge also. Jacked it up and discovered the lower arm ball joint and bushes are shot to bits!
I reckon if you can do it yourself, it's about £50, or about at least double that at a garage!
Hope this helps.

I have a GTi that does 0-62 in just under 8 and does what I can read off the clock to be 146 so I dunno where all these things about only doing 120 and being slow come from?! Enlighten me.
