Maybe he meant 7.3 turbo diesel but just rounded down for simplicity? No need to split hairs ;)
Anyways, I wouldn't be surprised if a 7.whatever diesel could get much more than 25 mpg, petrol would obviously be worse, no more than 15 mpg.

Fuelly.com reports "real world fuel economy" for the 2002-2003 Excursion 7.3 liter diesel as averaging 13.4 MPG. Anyone who thinks that they "could get much more than 25 MPG" is dreaming.

Buyers opted for this engine mainly for power and torque for heavy duty use and performance. MPG wasn't a concern.

What happens when you "don't know much about a diesel" yet decide to buy a non-running 20+ year old beater SUV diesel with nearly 200K miles on it?

Maybe someday the author of this review can answer that. These 7.3 Powerstrokes are actually known to go up to 400k miles.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my 1500.00 beater diesel Excursion. This old girl was destined to rot away where it was sitting prior to my purchase. New front rotors and brakes, u-joints, paint on roof/hood, ball joints, steering components, filters, headlights, and a vacuum pump. Upgraded sound system, wheel adapters, and 2021 F250 wheels/tires.
This vehicle is my favorite to drive and I still don’t know much about diesels. I have taken a couple of 1500 mile trips with this diesel Ex. And have not been disappointed yet. It now has 213k miles and never misses a beat. It averages around 15mpg with mostly city driving and does a little better on the highway. I have seen it average low 20s on mpg driving at 55 on mostly flat highways. I am still under 4500.00 invested in this grocery getting-family hauling beast.

It’s mostly driven in the city and averages 15mpg. It gets about 18mpg on the highway with a load of people and luggage.

My mpg only drops on this Excursion to an average of 13.4 if I drive it like an angry person; it usually holds right around 15mpg. It will easily get 22mpg driving on a mostly flat highway at 50mph, which is completely unrealistic in my world. I’ve only pulled a small boat with this Excursion and it didn’t seem to affect the mpg.

I myself am curious to know what kind of MPG a "7 litre diesel" gets. Seeing how Ford never made one with that displacement.
