1994 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 6 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Buy a Toyota!

Faults:

We replaced the transmission about 12 months after we bought the Explorer. Transmission shop said they get Ford Explorers in all the time with transmission problems. And it couldn't just be the transmission, we had to replace the torque converter also. Total cost of that repair was about $1300.00. The cruise control went out after a couple of months of use, that was a $300 repair.

General Comments:

We purchased the vehicle for $8600 and after 2 short years the Kelly Blue Book says it's worth about $4700.00. We have taken great care of this vehicle and it is in excellent condition. We have advertised it for 3 months now at $4700 with no takers. I don't how anyone in their right mind would buy a vehicle that loses almost 40% of it's value in 2 short years. I learned my lesson.

Lifetime warranty on pads and shoes.

Battery replaced once at 78,000 then again at 144,000 miles along with alternator and serpentine belt.

(big improvement in performance)

Stock air filter box and filter replaced at 167,000 with K.K.M. True-Rev Sport Induction Kit and conical filter. (Better acceleration now)

Bad valve chatter and pinging at 140,000 fixed by replacing EGR valve, cleaning MAF sensor, and burning only Chevron 92 octane.

Replaced shocks at 92,000 with Pro-comp Explorer shocks all around. (not very good) Replaced shocks again at 156,000 with Bilstein shocks all around. They are worth the money! Rides nice now.

Worthless Ford radio replaced at 50,000 miles with Pioneer CD/radio.

DVD entertainment center, thanks to Dell laptop and Ford cigarette lighter.

General Comments:

All the problems I have had with this vehicle are wear and tear items expected to be replaced.

I have heard of some people who had transmission problems and engine problems, but usually they were hard on them and towed boats. Also who knows what a previous owners driving habits were if you bought one used.

1994 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0 V-6 from North America

Summary:

A great buy!

Faults:

I have owned my Explorer Sport since 11th grade in high school and I'm now currently a junior in college. I have never had a problem with my car! The only thing that I have ever had to do is regular maintenance and replace the battery at 80K.

I get 20 miles per gallon and have loved my Explorer so much that I am planning on getting another one when I graduate. My parents like how well that my Explorer has done that they have bought my 2 younger brothers Explorers also. If you ever have a chance get an Explorer, get one!
