I sometimes wonder if those who complain about trucks actually know what they wanted in the first place.
If I want something that handles brilliantly, is fast and makes me smile, I'd buy a car.
If I want something that will pull a shedload of weight at minimal revs and will go all day earning its keep... then I buy a truck.
As to mpg.. what did you expect of a V8 pulling a couple of tonnes... 30mpg?
I like my Ford STX 150. It does what I expect a truck to do, and the dealer network is large enough that my truck when it goes wrong (it hasn't), it will be in and out ASAP and earning its keep.

I'm currently looking at a reg cab 05 STX F150 with the 4.2L in it. Was wondering if it's a good engine or not?

I have a 2005 F150 STX with the 4.6 V. It is a great truck.
I have been in a few accidents and I am impressed with what little dints and dings I got. I have never been hurt in that truck. It is a very safe truck and I can pull a Dodge or Chevy any day of the week. I have not lost, but one time when some kid put his Dodge 2500 on 35" tires in 4x4 and I still held him.
I haul a 25 foot trailer and can haul anything I have put on it so far with no problem.
I am very happy with my truck, and have never had any big problems with it.

Recently bought a supercab 4x STX 2005 used. It only had 36000. The sales man was shocked when I smelled the oil, crawled under from front to back, fired it up, went through the gears and said I'll take it. He asked don't you want to drive it? I said "Nope don't have to I'm a mechanic".
Love everything about it, except the roll up windows are a little tough going up. Figure they'll loosen up with time. The rubber mats are great for working.
This is my 5th ford truck. Never have I worn one out. Yep Ford tough!

I have a 2005 FX4 F-150 that has proven over and over why Ford is the king of the mountain when it comes to trucks.
I was never a Ford fan. I would have drove anything but a Ford, until my company changed to Ford. I fell in love at first drive. All I need is my german shepherd, wife, and Ford truck. What can I say, I'm in heaven.
Please don't be hard on the ford haters; when you're the best there's always going to be negative comments, it's a part of being the best.
