1996 Ford Galaxy GLX 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good

Faults:

Changed the battery, then two days later the interior lights, radio, sunroof and clock all packed up, and the boot light came on, plus the tripometer check's resting.

Been like it for about 5 months. Now need the lights working, as it getting dark now. Is there anything I can do? I've checked all fuses, and all are fine.

1996 Ford Galaxy Ghia 1.9t turbo diesel Injection from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Overall very comfortable and pretty reliable

Faults:

Display changed on climate control from Celsius to Fahrenheit.

Only blows cold air now.

General Comments:

I have a 1996 Galaxy and the display for the climate control has suddenly changed from Celsius to Fahrenheit.

Also the air only blows cold, despite what setting the temperature is set too.

Can't seem to find a cure.

Diesel engine very good on fuel; over 300miles on half a tank.

1996 Ford Galaxy Aspen 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Nice looking, good runner when it's working!

Faults:

Head gasket blew at 88,000 miles.

Still leaking water after head gasket was machined, skimmed and replaced. Suspected crack in block which could mean a new engine needs fitting!!!

Tire replacement. Tires wear quickly on this model.

Seats stain easily with the gray interior. I would advise families with children to buy seat covers and floor mats for this model.

I love the size of the car, especially for a family of 5 children, but I shall not be extending my family again, so I will opt for a smaller car next time. Reading the reviews on here, it may be sooner than I anticipated!!

General Comments:

Overall, I would not buy one of these cars again, as they are expensive to run, but they look nice and feel safe to be in.

1996 Ford Galaxy Aspen 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great if you're loaded and can afford the constant repairs

Faults:

Hergo Sensor failed at 95000 miles.

Air pump failed at 95000 miles.

Catalytic converter went at 95000 miles.

Reverse lights haven't worked properly since we got the car, electrical fault, works if you hold the gearstick down.

General Comments:

Seats aren't particularly comfortable on this model.

Interior falling apart from day one - can't really take a bashing from the kids.

Cost us far too much to run with so many things going wrong, we had to pay £1000 to get it through it's last MOT, only because the ford dealership we we're advised to take it to kept diagnosing the problem wrong and then charging us for our 'Courtesy car'

1996 Ford Galaxy GLX 2.0 DOHC from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Automatic gearbox rebuilt at 36,000 miles (£1600) ;

Automatic gearbox replaced at 52,000 miles (£1600) ;

Driver's side door lock replaced (£60) ;

Speaker grills all damaged (I am not going to bother replacing them) ;

Vanity mirror surrounds on both visors broken;

Water leak in passenger foot well (resolved by cleaning out the exit holes under windscreen) ;

Seat trim is poor and keeps coming off.

General Comments:

Although fuel consumption is poor (22 - 25mpg), the car is very comfortable.

Changed from Mercedes 190 to Galaxy due to back injury - height of car is just right for getting in and out, don't need to be a contortionist.

Great driving position, but A-posts hinder visibility especially when turning corners.

Overall, probably the best designed MPV on the market.

I have a Galaxy New type 2.5 years old 54000 miles automatic box has just had to be replaced. New gearbox from ford is £3500.00. Fan motor resistor needs replacing. Door handles plastic coating just comes off making them look donkey years old. Apart from that it's a smashing utility vehicle.

1996 Ford Galaxy Aspen 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good runner let down by horrid interior build quality

Faults:

In short, rotten interior build quality.

Badly placed speakers at foot of passenger doors began to break very quickly - and evidently cost a fortune to replace because of extensive man-hours to dismantle doors.

Numerous electrical problems, including lights in vanity mirrors that wouldn't turn off and had to be disconnected.

Plastic covers break too easily off metal areas at bases of seats, and from rear of seats. Dealer also quoted several hundred pounds to replace an entire seat, when the existing seat catches failed to engage with the floor hooks.

Very frequent tire [sorry UK the site spell-checker demands US english] replacement required.

General Comments:

Decent on-road performance for such a large vehicle. Fair economy - c.25 mpg urban.

Good mechanical reliability.

Good looker.

1996 Ford Galaxy GLX 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Too expensive to keep repairing

Faults:

Electronic ignition problems that could not be repaired without hefty costs forces the sale of the car (wildly uneven idling, very uneven running).

Electric windows needed extensive work.

Rear shock absorber completely broke after 20,000 miles.

Nut/bolt holding the engine/exhaust to the chassis became unfastened after 40,000 miles.

Catalytic converter needed replacing at 60,000 miles.

Each line of seats are too close together and easily damaged when removing or folding.

One of the seat securing catches broke after 10,000 miles.

Speaker grills keep cracking and breaking.

Interior mechanism in the roof started rattling at 50,000 miles.

General Comments:

Smooth ride on long summer journeys, but dangerous on ice and snow.

Very tacky interior. Everything seems to have been poorly designed so that it falls off whenever the slightest pressure is exerted.

No proper air conditioning on this model making trips to the Alps etc uncomfortable. Also the windows steam up in winter.

You said you had ignition problems, I too am having the same with my N Reg Galaxy, the car turns over, but doesn't spark. This happens fairly often so every time I go to start the car I have to cross my fingers and hope it will start.

What were you advised was the fault and out of interest did you manage to sell it?

20th Jan 2006, 10:26

The ignition problem on mine was due to an intermittent relay on the power hose connection.

1996 Ford Galaxy Aspen 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Seat Recliner handle broken. Door Handle broken. Front Bumper came loose.

General Comments:

All round ok, versatile, lots of space when seats removed, not much luggage space if all seven seats are in place.
