1998 Ford Mondeo LX Estate 1.8 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Very slow and feels cheap.

Engine lacks the power of previous turbo diesels I've owned.

General Comments:

Apart from the above I love it (and so does the bank manager).

1998 Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2.5 V6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Very comfortable

Faults:

Front subframe alignment eg. car pulling constantly to the left.

Windscreen broken by Ford while in for a service, apparently incorrect use of vehicle lifting gear causes the body to flex. Ford as usual refused to take responsibility.

General Comments:

Nice car, shame about the dealers!!!!!!

I have experienced similar windscreen cracking on my V6 Ghia X.

Also a broken nearside front spring, both of which I am told are common faults on this model, but both are unrecognised by Ford.

1998 Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2.0 16V from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Luxury motoring on a budget

Faults:

Absolutely nothing.

General Comments:

A very comfortable car with every conceivable extra (leather, a/c, cruise control, power seats, multi-CD etc) which has proven to be very cheap to run - low servicing costs, 35 mpg+. My only complaint is that the 2.0 engine is a little coarse and needs to be worked hard to get any real performance.

1998 Ford Mondeo ST24 5 Door 2.5 V6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A high performance sports saloon worth paying a bit extra for

Faults:

Absolutely nothing has gone wrong with this car!

General Comments:

The V6 engine is gutsy and responsive. The low profile tyres and sports suspension provide a superb ride.

The body kit and RS alloys make it stand out from ordinary Mondeos and gives it a bit of exlusivity despite the blue oval badge!

Downsides - insurance high, petrol economy not great if you push it and be prepared to pay at least £130 for tyres.

I still look forward to driving it every single day!

1998 Ford Mondeo ST24 2.5 V6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A fast, reasonable priced car. Well equipped, slighty greedy

Faults:

I would probably still have it today if I had not been involved in a crash where the car written off. But it did have a gearbox design problem.

General Comments:

The Mondeo ST24 in practical terms was basically in the same type bracket as my previous car, the Vauxhall Vectra, that is they are both 2.5 V6 engines but I felt there was always a problem with the Vectra's gearbox. Later on I was to find out from Vauxhall Luton that they were actually fitted with a SAAB gear box that is only in the 2.5 V6 models. The Mondeo is definitely the better of the two cars, but I must say I enjoyed them both.

1998 Ford Mondeo LX TD 1.8 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Family

Faults:

A/C broke, but they fixed it under warranty.

General Comments:

Comfortable, good mpg, never failed yet.

Engine a little bit noisy on the motorway, but what you expect from a diesel?

Can be very fast when the turbo gets going. Lovely car.

I have had a Mondeo GLX TD Estate for the past 4 years, it has covered 200,000 miles (private use), with maintenance costs of £200.... £50 a year.

I have done all the work myself which was 2 timing belts, 1 side handbrake cable, bottom ball joint and a set of discs.

I am still on the original clutch and exhaust.

I have not included tyres because I count them as wear and tear.

1998 Ford Mondeo LX with A/C 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

The screen washer hose got nipped in the bonnet/hood hinge, causing the hose to blow off the reservoir. Took about half an hour to fix (a valence has to come off).

General Comments:

Great handling. Smooth. Quick enough. 1st, 2nd and 3rd are geared for town use rather than open road, but you live with it. I get 32mpg average; up to 36.5mpg on a high speed run - and that's after allowing for a 6% over-reading odometer.

1998 Ford Mondeo LX Verona 1.8 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Nothing really - fingers crossed.

General Comments:

Really good car. Surprised me greatly, as I used to own a Sierra which was a nasty piece of work. Air Con was a nice bonus but does smell a little and affect performance when on. Radio is inferior to anything else in this price range I looked at. Other than that, the engine is smooth and responsive, ride is relatively firm and handling excellent. My high miles do not appear a problem for it (as I expected) and running costs are very reasonable. However, wife still thinks it looks boring :-)
