1998 Ford Mondeo LX 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A good car let down by bad dealers

Faults:

Rear windscreen wiper failed at 9,000 miles.

Air conditioning malfunctioned at 15,000 miles.

Gearbox became increasingly stubborn after 20,000 miles.

Brake pads wore out and had to be changed after 14,000 miles and again after 26,000 miles.

General Comments:

Reliability wasn't too bad considering high mileage.

Worst thing about the Mondeo was the dismal dealer service.

But the Mondeo's good points outweighed its bad points.

Interior was spacious and comfortable.

Ride and handling were both very good.

1.8 engine gave decent performance.

Fuel bills were inexpensive for a 1.6.

I have a mondeo LX 1998 had it for 2 years the only problem was the right suspension went at 97,000 miles and apart from a couple of minor faults the car has worked brilliant easy handling smooth petrol 2.0 engine id recommend 1 also very comfortable.

1998 Ford Mondeo verona 1.8 td from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good all round family car that is cheap to run

Faults:

Broken front spring.

Rubber bushes replaced in front suspension arms.

Anti roll bar bushes replaced twice, but cheap to buy and fitted in 15 minutes.

New battery.

Relay for heater plugs.

Set of heater plugs.

General Comments:

Good driving car, handles well.

Easy to work at, I do the most of my own work, it only goes to a garage for major work.

Plenty of room, large boot.

Good value. 4 years old when I bought it and payed about 20% of new price because of the high mileage.

It's a diesel and it will be capable of 300,000+ miles. just take a look at private hire taxi firms that use mondeos.

Plenty of toys, good sound system, air con, heated front screen, alloys etc.

1998 Ford Mondeo Verona 1.8 TD from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great value for money

Faults:

Absolutely nothing in ten months of ownership.

General Comments:

Engine noisy, but 47 mpg.

Ride bit too hard, but bearable.

Very precise steering, excellent handling.

Effective aircon, but affects performance.

Rusting on sills and wheel arches - you wouldn't get that on a Peugeot or Citroen.

Standard speakers a bit poor.

Heated windscreen is a bonus.

Huge boot.

Seats way too hard, but that seems to be the norm on cars these days.

With the exception of the rust which I haven't experienced, I would agree with all of that.

Some skinflint previous owner replaced the heated screen in mine with a standard one, so I have a button and a light, but not much else! : (

Slow, but reliable, well built, and good to drive. I'd buy another.

1998 Ford Mondeo Ghia 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Not the cheapest; not the most functionality, but the best value car available

Faults:

Electric seat adjustment switch failed.

Front fog lamp failure.

Electric headlamp adjust faulty one side - constantly wines & aims high.

Cam belt tensioner thread stripped (10mm engagement on M10). New oil pump fitted.

One ignition coil failed.

Both sun visors fell to pieces.

Rear central seat belt fraying.

Rear centre seat (armrest hinges) are very close to the passenger's pelvis.

B pillar trim has fallen off exposing the head to the seat belt bolt & steel clips.

General Comments:

The handling and brakes are exceptionally good. You would struggle to get it wrong in the dry.

The car is reliable. I've never failed to get home. The cam belt tensioner problem occurred during service so it has never let me down.

There are plenty of extras, roof, air & decent radio.

The security is good. The alarm never goes off accidentally & it's unlikely to be stolen.

Getting parts is simple & they are cheap.

Visibility & drive-ability are good, day & night.

Auto box is fine, but the engine calibration is for a manual so the pair are ill matched.

It would be good to be able to turn the ABS off in the snow.

Fuel economy (32mpg) is better than my Volvo.
