I don't know where you get it from that these are such good cars. Ford never actually made a Mondeo that was well built. Huge loss of value, huge rust problems (in the past), and poor build quality. But they always seem nice when they are new. After a couple of years they are just junk, all of them. This has been the story with every single model from Ford since the 70's, and people still buy into the scam.

No way. I've driven various Fords the last 15 years, including a 07 Mondeo, and my experience is that they are generally good, with few problems.

I've had three Mondeos as well and they were all good, a 1998 2.0 LX, a 2005 TDCi, and most recently a 2015 diesel.

The problem with the early 2000's diesels is that the new technology at the time such as high pressure injectors and turbos was in its infancy. And then regulation for environment meant we had to add diesel particle filters and various other emissions controls devices, all while trying to maintain power AND economy from the engine AND comply with environment emissions.

Manufacturers and engineers struggled to get this perfect. Unfortunately the issues with these engines as wonderfully powerful and economic as they can be, the pay off is complicated components and high repair bills when they do go wrong. And these problems are not exclusive to Ford - many other diesels from this time period had problems as well. I had a 2005 Mazda 6 and a 2008 BMW 3 series (both diesel) and actually had more problems with those than my Mondeo from around the same time period. EGR valve failed on the BMW, and the Mazda had issues with the DPF and oil seals. And much more as well.

In all honesty - try a petrol engine from this time period (1990s - 2006) in any car if you want simplicity and reliability. Don't bother with diesel anything until well after 2010 - about by then, they finally got them sorted.
