1990 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 HO V8 from North America

Faults:

Replaced the transmission at 170,000KM. EGR valve, fuel pump. I also had a dash board rattle but that was corrected for free. So far that's it.

General Comments:

Very very nice car. The gas mileage for the car is pretty low so it's expensive to drive all the time. The interior is perfect for 2 people, but cramped for 4. I had to replace the AM/FM radio with a aftermarket CD player but that was a personnal choice. I love the amazing performance of this puppy. I say if you don't care about gas get it.

1990 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 L from North America

Faults:

Bought new. A/C evaporator changed three times before 50,000mi, never after.

Chronic problems: A/C O-rings leaking, rough idling, even after having been adjusted the problem would appear again. Head gasket at about 20,000 mi. Tendency to knock under load at temperatures above 90F, forced me to switch to premium gas in summer. Heater coil rusted at 70,000mi which damaged the radio. Water pump at 80,000mi. Alternator at 125,000mi. The plastic parts inside have a tendency to crack after a while. That's it. The rest is regular maintenance.

General Comments:

This was my second Mustang GT. I sold it after 125,000mi without a single spot of rust. I bought a 99 GT right after. The 90 GT served me well for 9 years. After the first set of problems, fixed under warranty, the car ran well. It is fast (much less than the 99 though), and has ample torque at low rpm (more than the 99). It lacks traction under wet conditions, and the brakes are only average. My average gas mileage was 23mi/gal, 1/3 city, 2/3 highway. The gears had a tendency to grind between 2nd and 3rd if shifted rapidly. The handling is good on smooth surfaces but worsens when the road surface does.

I am thinking on buying a 1990 Mustang 5.0... I have a 73 Mustang Mach 1 right now... very fast but very expensive gas wise... I see your mpg average is pretty good compared to my 8 mpg city, 12 highway on premium fuel...

What other costs have caused you to mark a "4" for overall expenses?

Thanks,

Robert

I bought a '73 Mach 1 about a year ago. I pit a 429 cobra jet with a blower and 125 shoot of NOS It pulls 8's in the 1/4 mile and you still can drive it on the street. but the gas is a problem. I get 6 mpg well have fun and race hard
