2013 Ford Mustang GT Premium 5.0 from North America

Summary:

Underrated & a great balance of performance & daily drivability

Faults:

Almost everything has been routine maintenance. Just a few things haven’t been:

1) Seat belt holders on the B pillars are not designed well & can easily break (cheap plastic). The second time my driver side one broke, I replaced it with a headrest mounted belt guide from a Dodge Challenger. Has worked better

2) A cooling fan went out around 90k miles. AC didn’t work at idle anymore (went on for months) & the car eventually overheated one day.

3) Might be my specific car because it’s stored in a hot garage in Arizona, but the battery dies every 12 months. I have been through 10+ car batteries in the time I’ve owned the car.

4) Blower motor for AC made some noise several years into ownership, then the climate control speed dial developed a mind of its own after a while (maybe around 80k miles?) & would blow high if I set it to low or wouldn’t blow at all. Eventually replaced that motor.

Other stuff is just typical maintenance & wear & tear items. I take good care of the car.

General Comments:

Prior to this car, I had never owned any previous car more than 2 years in my life. This one I have now owned for 11 years & hope it lasts at least another 5. It really has been that good. Very comfortable & roomy inside, & very good ride quality for a car this powerful & capable. I had an Impreza STI years ago which would jolt if it ran over a leaf. The suspension in the Mustang feels like a Rolls Royce compared to the STI & has been perfect for over a decade as a daily driver. Don’t underrate something as simple as suspension & ride quality when thinking about a car you may want to daily drive & keep for a long time.

Mine is a 6 speed manual GT Premium which I added a Ford Racing supercharger to when it was new (installed by dealer at 1k miles after engine was broken in). 624hp with the modification. Other than the supercharger, the car is still 100% stock. Traction is only slightly more than a rumor in 1st gear, but 2nd gear on up you don’t need to worry about fishtailing or no grip. Despite the power, this car has been as reliable as anyone could hope for. Very few issues as you can see above. I doubt there are many cars on earth which can do 0-60 in <4 seconds like this car can that would have so few (& minor) issues in 120k miles.

The Mustang in general is quite an underrated car & seems to have gotten better over time. It will be a sad day to me when they no longer produce these in manual. Hopefully they still will at the time I get my next car, which may very well be another one of these.

Excellent review, thanks, I'm from the UK and looking at getting a manual one of these!

It’s an awesome car. I still have it now as of July 2024. Has about 127k miles now I think. I moved to a cold place recently, but I really don’t want to get rid of this Mustang. So, I will try it out for a winter here & see how things go haha.

2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 5.0 naturally aspirated from North America

Summary:

Handles great, fast, it's not a drag car it's more a road car

Faults:

Nothing so far.

General Comments:

The Mustang boss 302 model has always been an icon. The car comes only in manual transmission, the car has a very aggressive look, it's race red "beautiful color."... when I drove it I was hooked, it handles like a race car.

The car is limited production... I love driving the car... the motor just keeps on going to about 7,500 rpm... it's rated for 444 hp... only issue which I don't like is the transmission (MT82) designed in Germany and I believe it's Chinese made... definitely a negative... but so far no problems... I don't abuse the car.

The newer S550 models I believe have the favorable Tremec transmission...

I had an issue with heat coming from center console... brought the car to the dealer and they could not diagnose the problem. I took apart the center console and found the shifter boot was separated from base... the shifter was upgraded to a Ford Performance close ratio shifter (still a factory part).

I have no confidence in dealership technicians, wish I hadn't purchased the warranty ($3,000)... all in all the car is fun to drive and I get thumbs up when I take her out...

Good review and enjoy your car :)

Please keep us updated as things progress - particularly with the MT82 transmission.

2013 Ford Mustang Premium Package 3.7 V6 from North America

Summary:

Fun, attractive, reliable sports car

Faults:

Seat belt buckle on the passenger side would not clip the belt into place (covered under Ford warranty).

Otherwise just normal maintenance.

General Comments:

The 3.7 V6 is great power and sounds kind of sporty when you take off. Not like the GT exhaust, but it doesn't sound wimpy. This engine gets 305 horsepower, which is fun and efficient. Gas mileage on the highway is about 29 MPG and in town about 20 MPG.

My Mustang had the Shaker radio sound system, which to this day still sounds great.

Handling is good for a solid rear axle car.

The looks department is great, and this year Mustang looks a little more beefy and aggressive; gets lots of stares and thumbs up.

My only complaint about this car is the Ford/Microsoft Sync; it tends to work when it wants, including the Bluetooth and voice commands.

The only reason I traded this car in is I saw a brand new 2018 Mustang and fell in love with it, just like I did with this 2013 when I bought it. Trade in value like my previous Mustang was excellent. You can't go wrong with the 2013 V6!
