1992 Ford Orion Ghia EFI 1.6 CVH from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Reliable with performance

Faults:

Indicator stalks put the main beam on when activated. That's all!!!

General Comments:

This is one quick car! I've slightly modified mine and it can beat a 2.0 Mondeo off the mark. I have de-catted it and K&Ned it. It really does sound sweet when given some gas! Basically under the hood is the old model Escort's XR3i engine!

This model didn't have a cat.

Oh and if it had a cat, removing it means violating MOT and you would not be able to renew.

The Orion Ghia EFI did have a CAT because when I tried to obtain an insurance quote for mine they asked if it was a CAT model.

And by the way "it sounds sweet when given some gas". I think not. The CVH engine is a rough, inflexible old nail of an engine that should've been laid to rest many years before it was. It's basically a '50's Kent engine with a different head, as is the engine in the current Ford Ka!!!

1992 Ford Orion LX 1.8i 16v from UK and Ireland

Faults:

The speedometor stopped working.

The driver's side door slave broke so the alarm kept going off.

The full beam sticks on.

I have a had a broken wire in the loom which caused all kind of running problems.

General Comments:

Great car to drive in comfort terms.

It is not responsive enough in terms of acceleration to justify a 1800 size engine.

Watch out for rust on the rear arches.

1992 Ford Orion LX 1.4 CVH Carb from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A depressing start

Faults:

Oil light came on, the engine started to rattle and it ground to a halt.

General Comments:

On the first run out in it, it broke down. I hope this is not a bad sign.

1992 Ford Orion Ghia 1.6 EFi from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Dapper ride

Faults:

Gearbox.

Dashboard lights.

Diff seals.

Electric window.

Heated windscreen.

Radiator.

General Comments:

A very nice drive, great for taking the family on holiday and when the boy racer spirit takes you a few people are surprised (not everybody) when you leave them standing. Sounds like heaven when you give it some.

Altogether for its size, a rough ride.

1992 Ford Orion Ghia Si 1.8 16v 180bhp from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Very good car for performance. Easy and cheap to modify

Faults:

Car radio packed up (Replaced with Alpine CD system).

Most expensive item to go wrong is the hot/cold air blower which packed up. Fuse and relay board developed a short (common problem with the Ghia so I've been told), Ford price to repair £280.00. Quick fix: take the 12v supply from the radio and jump a wire up to the control and it works (Cost 99p for a metre of 25amp wire).

General Comments:

I've done quite a few mods to the car to take it from the standard 130BHP to just under 180BHP. I can outrun most of the big saloons from a stand still and find it quite fun when at lights and sales execs try to outrun me and I just touch the pedal, burn and leave them in the dust.

1992 Ford Orion Ghia EFI 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Quick, temperamental, pinchable

Faults:

Gearbox failure twice.

Starter motor.

Alternator twice.

Ball joints and bushes.

Shock absorbers.

Exhaust.

Broken into twice.

General Comments:

I use the car for road rallies, so that is probably why it keeps breaking! I've also modified it as things have broken. i.e. performance exhaust, stiff shocks etc. She is a quick car but suffers from lots of niggling problems. On the whole very enjoyable.

1992 Ford Orion 1.3 Riche 1.3 petrol from Netherlands

Faults:

Had one big electronic problem that costed about $500 to fix, but no other large expenses, except the usual.

General Comments:

Don't buy original exhaust pipes from Ford dealers, these are not only more expensive than the ones at a quick-fitter, but do also rust quite fast.
