1991 Ford Probe GL 2.2L 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

A wonderful car for the money that delivers with performance, style, and comfort!

Faults:

My driver's side headlight stopped working, except for when my brights were on. This was very inexpensive and very easy to replace on my own. Nothing serious at all has gone wrong with it, however.

General Comments:

I've been very pleased with this car ever since I purchased it. It's been reliable, comfortable, and extremely fun!

The car seems completely solid and well made. It handles magnificently and can zip in and out of traffic with ease. My probe has some serious pep to it!

The interior is very comfortable, and ergonomically designed. All of the controls are perfectly place, and are reached very easily. The front seats are quite comfortable, but could use a little more side support for those high speed corners. The rear seats are comfortable as well, but leg room becomes an issue. Getting in and out of the vehicle isn't the easiest task in the world if you're a bigger person, but I do just fine.

My Probe is an absolute blast to drive! It has good acceleration and cornering capabilities. Staying centered in the lane can become a problem because of the steering, so just pay attention. Also, performance lags to the point where it's definitely noticeable when you have all of the other seats filled with bigger people. Storage capabilities are fantastic! Not that you'd actually need to fit a set of drag racing slicks in the hatch, but boy could you!

1991 Ford Probe GT 2.2 turbo from Germany

Summary:

Good looking waste of money

Faults:

Lots of smaller things (like antenna (typical!), pump for rear washer...)

Complete belt-system malfunction (OK, I don't need them, but try selling a car with non-functional belts!)

Brakes (the whole thing: both sides disc+block)

Driveshaft dust cover.

Trunk collecting lots of water (leaking gasket in the rear light unit).

Valves don't sound so good (hydrostatics) and need to be replaced.

And since last week there's some new sound, I don't know exactly what problem it indicates :(

In short: Every few weeks something different goes wrong with this piece of junk! And even a small and simple screw nut costs a fortune!

I own the car for round about 4 months now and spent over 1.500 EU for repairs. OK, it was quite cheap and it is quite old as well, but I think this is far too much anyhow.

General Comments:

This car is really good looking and extremely frugal when it comes to gas - even if you kick ass with it. It is quite fast with a fair acceleration and the turbo makes it fun to drive (though if accelerated to the limit the chassis can hardly cope with the cars power. But besides it's fairly comfortable).

But it is definitively not designed to last for 10 years or longer!!!

Recently I saw a '91 Toyota Supra... just looks like a Probe... well I think it's not too late to make up for a mistake :)

1991 Ford Probe LX 3.0 liter from North America

Summary:

A decent driver, and quick when you want it

Faults:

The only things I've had trouble with were the CV joints, and the steering knuckles.

When I changed my wheels to the snow wheels that the previous owner gave me with the car, 4 lug nuts broke off.

General Comments:

From when I recieved the car it was really quick.

The cabin was comfortable for the front passenger and driver.

Seats were comfortable.

Reliable car, would like another.

1991 Ford Probe GL 2.2 liter 4 cylinder non-turbo from North America

Summary:

Get one now!

Faults:

The passenger rear wheel bearing went out.

The passenger side door handle broke, someone pulled hard on it while it was locked.

It developed an exhaust leak near the rear.

General Comments:

I love this car, it's never had any drive-train problems. Everything that's ever broke I could easily fix myself.

Speed is more than adequate for a car this inexpensive and it always does exactly what I want it to. It can out-handle just about anything also.

The interior is designed perfectly, everything is in reach and it has advanced features such a automatic seat belts, door air conditioning, a rear-view mirror that won't fall off, a tilt wheel that tilts the gauges also, awesome air conditioning, and a cool sound system.

The outside of the car looks great also and the paint has no problems, even though it has never been in a garage.

This is the best car I can recommend for the average person. The GT's often give the Probes a bad name, but the GL's don't deserve it. It has 190,000 miles and is still going strong.
