1994 Ford Probe SE 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

A reliable cheap car that is fun to drive

Faults:

Clutch was gone when I got it and the flywheel need to be machined, but it was probably the original clutch.

Needed a new flexible exhaust pipe.

Paint has mini cracks in it-a common problem with Probes.

Not the smoothest ride and there is some vibration from the interior parts.

General Comments:

This car has great handling, and the gas pedal is very responsive (with the manual transmission anyway).

The interior is small and might be a tight squeeze for a large person.

Get this car in manual shift and you won't be disappointed.

1994 Ford Probe SE 2.0 I4 from North America

Summary:

Good Looking Sports Car For The Money

Faults:

Had to replace the water pump at 138,000 miles, 1st time since I owned it.

Alternator has to be replaced now (at 141,000 miles)

Rear hatch cylinders need to be replaced as they don't hold the hatch up anymore.

Automatic Transmission Shifts abnormally when the Overdrive light comes on (only when driven at high speeds for a continuous time)

Rear Hatch is rusting (common problem on 2nd generation probes)

Check Engine light comes on periodically.

General Comments:

Good car overall, though the repairs are expensive as are the parts.

Working on the car is very difficult when it comes to major repairs (alternator, water pump, belts)

Handles well even at high speeds.

Poor performance from the automatic transmission.

A good car to add modifications to as there are many to choose from, ranging from the body design to engine components.

1994 Ford Probe 16V 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A car let down by its manufacturer

Faults:

Distributor packed up; £400 replacement.

Immobiliser packed up; £150 repair.

General Comments:

Ford are aware of the problem and refuse to acknowledge it, therefore eliminating their cost of a recall, and cashing in on people's misfortune at over £500 a time.

My Probe has now packed up again, and has been left in my drive until I can swallow my pride and pay for it again.

I am completely perplexed at how a large company like Ford can treat their customers with such contempt. I now refuse to buy another Ford, and would urge others to follow suit.

1994 Ford Probe GT 2.5 V6 from North America

Summary:

A high performance bargain

Faults:

Distributer was the first thing to go at 122,000 miles.

Replaced all brake rotors.

At 145,000 miles engine starting burning oil.

At 153,000 miles I replaced the motor with a used one that had 75,000 miles on it.

At 163,000 miles I lost third gear.

At 166,000 miles a piston rod snapped, spun, and seized the motor.

General Comments:

I have loved the car since the day I got it.

The motor was strong all the way up until the day it blew.

I have a rebuilt motor and transmission going into it very very soon.

I have always thought the car is quick and it really handles great.

The interior is mint and the exterior needs a little work.

I can't wait to get it back!

Ford got rid of it because it was creeping up on the mustangs spotlight.

1994 Ford Probe SE from North America

Summary:

A pint-size sports car

Faults:

Nothing major has gone wrong with this car other than a few minor things such as new brakes, battery, etc.

This car will completely freeze over when the temp drops, I can absolutely not wash this car unless I have no plans the next morning when it's winter. The door handles and gas door likes to freeze shut. And as a result the passenger side door handle is broken on the inside.

The driver's side rear window is coming loose from the frame at the corner and rattles over bumpy roads.

General Comments:

Very cheap to maintain. Only a four cylinder, but is very peppy! Backseat is small, but has good trunk space. Very cute little car!

I know what the problem is... I had the same thing happen with mine. On the air intake, there is a sensor along the tubing. (wires hooked up to black air pipe) Take off the sensor, spray contact cleaner into the small hole on the one side of the sensor. This gets clogged every now and again, and it needs to be cleaned. It's usually a bug or something. After spraying tip the thing down and let rest until it dries. Put it back and I swear your car will run like new! Or you can take it in to a Murray's or Auto Zone for a free code reading. They'll tell you exactly what's wrong. But my money is on the mass air flow sensor! Good luck!
