1996 Ford Probe GT 2.5 V6 24v from North America

Summary:

A good performance car with high mantainence

At 72,000 the crank-shaft positioning sensor wire got caught in the fan belts and cut it in half causing the distributor to short out.

About 80,000 the water pump decited to give out.

At 90,000 the starter shorted out causing the engine to jump time.

At 90,001 the half shaft split.

At 91,000 the check engine light will stay on for no reason.

General Comments:

The car (when it decides to work properly) is terrific!

Handles great!

Terrific acceleration!

Great turning radius!

All with its sleek, sporty and stealthy design, it's an all around good car if you have the money to maintain and repair it.

1996 Ford Probe GT 2.5 from North America

Summary:

A high performance bargain

Faults:

The sunroof is very rusty. Rear wheel bearing needs to be replaced.

General Comments:

This car is very quick and handling is superb. This is my third Probe and I just couldn't find anything that would be a better substitute (cost-wise and perfromance-wise) on the used car market. Very responsive, great looking - even today GT will get lots of attention on the road. The interior is sporty looking. Working under the hood can be time consuming since it's very tight. Probes never gave me any serious problems. I've done all repairs myself and I enjoy owning my GT. Good on gas.

Hi, I totally agree with you 100%, these cars are awsome. I had a base model probe and I recently got into a fender bender, I'm seeking to buy a probe gt, any year from 93-97. If you know of anybody selling one, could you please help me. I love these cars and desperately want another one. My email is latinlos42@yahoo.com. please help.

Carlos.

1996 Ford Probe GT 2.5L V6 from North America

Summary:

A great looking nice performing car, that requires extra time and maintenance

Faults:

While I have only had the car for a brief time. Nothing much has gone wrong with the car, except for a problem with the check engine light.

The PCM was giving out several codes, indicating that there were several possible problems which were causing the engine to run not at Ford's specifications.

General Comments:

The 93-97 Probes have distinctively attractive body styles.

The 2.5L V6 engine performs smoothly and the acceleration is brisk.

The retractable head lights give the car character and distinguishable style.

Interior styling on the car is well laid out.

However longevity on the car is questionable.

The motor for the retractable headlights usually burns out.

The interior is not made of quality parts such as found in luxury cars. My Probe has a small crack in the dash due to hot sunny weather.

The rear trunk lifts hydraulically problems occur with the lifters.

The probe was discontinued after 1997 and finding body parts for the car is hard.

Finding technicians familiar with the car's layout is hard. Usually you will pay a lot for labor costs when in the repair shop.

The PCM and electrical system is sound, but the engine bay and room under the hood is tight. Do it yourself mechanics, like myself, will find working with the car a tall task.

I was wondering if you could give me reference to any detailed and accurate exploded engine diagrams including wiring and vacuum charts as well on-line. Being the do-it-yourself mechanic that you say you are I thought I might get lucky to get good information from you as I also am a do-it-myself mechanic! I have a hard time getting reliable information from the locals being that I am a young female who happens to be very attractive and often underestimated! I greatly appreciate any information that you could pass my direction and will make every effort to use your advice as effectively as possible!

1996 Ford Probe GT 2.6 from North America

Faults:

Faulty alarm control module. Erratic idle, dealer replaced distributor. Rack and pinion steering locked up and was replaced. Rear lift-gate hydraulics replaced. All under warranty.

After warranty ended, engine idle became erratic again. Replaced spark plug wires and installed platinum tip plugs. Brakes were replaced twice. Goodyear Eagle GT tires were adequate at best.

General Comments:

This vehicle was driven by my wife and never abused. It is definitely a high maintenance car. When it ran great it was fun to drive. Every year there was always something going wrong with it. Seats are cheap and uncomfortable for larger persons. Forget about comfort and space in the back seats!!
