1998 Ford Puma Lux 1.7 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Compact and bijou, marred by faults

Faults:

Rear brake piston failed resulting in total brake failure.

Heater/A/C control failed.

Seat lift mechanism failed.

Indicator flasher failed - replaced and still faulty.

Rear wiper failed.

HEGO sensor failed.

Rain water pours into the boot.

Back shelf falls into the boot.

General Comments:

Sexy and fast car for the money, let down by niggly faults and crap dealer service - Buy one on import and you get an extra 3K left over to compensate for the time it will be off the road!

1998 Ford Puma 1.7 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fun, value-for-money and almost practical for a Sports Coupe

Faults:

Water entering boot when opened too quickly.

General Comments:

Lovely car to play with. Beats most other cars around the corners but not terribly quick in a straight line.

The traction control is fairly useless. The ABS works fine but the brakes could do with a little more bite.

Running costs are reasonable if you don't flog it - but then why bother with a Sports Coupe?!

It's actually also quite a practical small car - sufficient room in the boot for the weekly family shopping and room for two kids in the back. Actually there's room for two adults in the back if you're not going too far.

Rear visibility sucks but you get used to reversing by mirrors in the end.

The only serious problem with it is it's a Ford - the dealers are mostly incompetent and reliability isn't Ford's strong point. Still, at least I've been lucky with mine and repairs are cheap after all.

Overall an excellent car and definitely value for money if you buy it at Continental prices (~£12,000 OTR with all the goodies).

Summary:

Noisy, nippy, expensive pile of crap

Faults:

Rain water goes into the boot.

Pparcel shelf falls into the boot

Tracking out when new, we all know that Ford rip you off for tracking. Three different brand new Fords in my case.

General Comments:

Everyone sings the praises of the Puma.

Have they ever driven a decent car?

1998 Ford Puma 1.7 from Sweden

Summary:

Fun, small, wonderful handling, cheap

Faults:

Sub-frame had to be adjusted. The front tyres were worn blank on the inside.

General Comments:

Great handling! Very fun to drive in 3rd to 5th gear. The gearbox and engine begs for it! It is really fun to drive actively on smaller roads.

1998 Ford Puma 1.7 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Lots of rattles from both driver and passenger doors - a design fault? Reliability excellent - nothing has gone wrong with any electrics.

General Comments:

Super little car. Residuals very strong. Long waiting list. Silver colour probably best - most popular. You get lots of stares and envious looks! Suspension is hard and can be unsettling and the dash although stylish is still ripped from a Fiesta.

Overall, BUY ONE!

1998 Ford Puma 1.7 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Parcel shelf keeps jumping out, easily fixed.

Tracking out, fixed under warranty.

General Comments:

By far and away the best car for for money on looks, handling and performance. Residual value remains very strong especially now Puma is to be discontinued in 2000 :-(

1998 Ford Puma 1.7 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Car recalled for brake master cylinder replacement, sidelight bulb blown. General creaks/rattles, especially from around driver's door.

General Comments:

Good value car, not much else around the £15k mark that can compete. Good handling, except that it gets upset by mid-corner bumps.
