1988 Ford Sierra GLSi 2.0i SOHC from UK and Ireland

Summary:

At 60ukp, a bargain!

Faults:

Exhaust rusted shortly after purchase, engine oil sump perforated by rust above x-member (engine out to change), steering rack is due soon.

General Comments:

I bought the car as an insurance write-off for next to nothing. Re-build of rear end quite cheap (I was working in a bodyshop at the time). A few rusty panels but overall cheap to run and maintain.

1988 Ford Sierra L 1.8 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A most excellent car

2 exhaust systems.

Servo replaced.

Battery replaced.

New water pump.

Brake pads and drum pads.

5 oil changes.

General Comments:

The car has only let me down once in the 7 plus years I've had it.

I feel it's still one of the best looking cars even now.

1988 Ford Sierra C Estate 1.6 from Finland

Summary:

Good economical wagon

Faults:

Rear door glass broke up without any reason (car was in a garage). Door sides are rusting away. Oil pump disaster caused a totally destroyed engine (fortunately new replacement engine cost only 3000 Marks (=300pounds) with assembly).

General Comments:

I'm pleased with this wagon, at least there is enough room for almost everything. Thing I'm not very happy is the spartan equipment level, because the model C has even less standard equipment (I haven't ever had another car which don't have a clock or low-petrol alarm light). Rear-wheel drive is really enjoyable in winter (You can affect on every little movement unlike with front-wheel drive).

1988 Ford Sierra GLX 2.0i from Sweden

Summary:

A fine car for youngsters

Faults:

Several problems with brakes (rear).

Rusty at some places (doors).

General Comments:

Good car.

Not so expensive to buy.

If you take care of the car it's not so costly to own.

Spare parts easy to find.

The model can be found at low prices these days even though it has some fine equipment (ABS-brakes).

1988 Ford Sierra GL Estate 1.8 Pinto from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A successor that didn't actually match it's predecessor

Faults:

Worn out steering rack.

Snapped rear spring.

Snapped clutch cable.

General Comments:

MUCH slower than the 2-litre, but very good top speed (I've had 110mph so far).

Doesn't feel as bulky as an estate should.

Mk2 Sierra is nowhere near as nimble as the original model.

Nice ride.

I pressed the clutch pedal down, and it went "ping" and never came back up.

Easy to fix though, a ten minute job. :)

I too have snapped a Sierra clutch cable. Unfortunately, my Ford garage here has no idea what a "Sierra" is! Any help in finding a suitable substitute, or perhaps a later-model US Ford swap that would fit??

Mine is some 60 inches in length, so may be less available than some shorter length cables, I suppose.

I have thought of replacing the combination cable/housing with an open cable system and pulleys attached to the frame of my little Westfield, but it would be easier if I could find a direct bolt-on replacement.

Jerry.

1988 Ford Sierra GL 1.8 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

RUST on doors, boot, bumper mountings and bulkhead. This is apparently common if the model was built in Dagenham as opposed to their german counterpart.

Rear wheel drive - very poor handling in frost or snow conditions.

General Comments:

Engine is sound and very cheap for replacment parts, although body work is very prone to rust.

The Sierra loves its fuel, so much so it sucks through the trans siberian pipeline until it's dry.

Ford obviously knew what they were doing by replacing it with the Mondeo, lets hope their body work wasn't built in Dagenham!

1988 Ford Sierra LX 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

General wear & tear e.g. exhaust, tyres, brake pads, valve stem oil seals, recently burned a valve no 3 pot.

General Comments:

Good reliable motor, always ready to jump into and go. It has 129,000 miles on clock, and can still get off its mark.

Faults:

Throttle quadrant broke. Rear spring broke. Otherwise wear and tear for 80,000 miles ie clutch, exhaust, shockers, front brake pads and discs.

A very comfortable, reliable car which I have had from new. Keep away from main dealers though.
